Jasper's POV

I felt more peaceful that night than I had in years, my thoughts for once not fusing into an array of vicious nightmares. My head felt light and once I'd dealt with Caspian's problem- a disagreement between two men- I returned to my little cabin, a goofy smile on my face that even my wolf couldn't wipe away.

My people shot me shocked glances; they had never seen me so openly happy. To them, I was an uptight, moody Alpha who showed little mercy and couldn't always control his wolf. But so what? I'd freaking found my mate- and she hadn't rejected me!

She was perfect. Witty and confident and beautiful and I was sure that she didn't even know it. My pulse quickened just thinking about her. My mate. My Violet.

My wolf growled possessively and a shiver of lust shook through me. I imagined myself kissing the line of her jaw and tracing the lines of her tattoos, feeling her tremble at my touch. Feeling her desire for me. Feeling her love.

So this was what it felt like. I'd heard stories about mates and of course, there were many mates in my pack but I had never imagined that there was a possibility I could be someone's mate.

My father had not been my mother's mate, but I was raised to ignore the fear that my mother felt towards him and believe that they were as happy as any other mates. I didn't know who my parents' real mates were, but I often wondered what the story was there and why they chose each other. But I never asked, and it was too late now.

My father had been a vicious killer and after accusing my mother of cheating on him with his best friend Cal, he went on one of the most notorious killing sprees in wolf history that left Cal and his mate dead.

He also killed my mother. I had been twelve when it happened, and the news destroyed me. But as much as it hurt, the story did not end there. My father had gotten away and for eleven years, had not been seen or heard from by anyone.

At first after his disappearance, all of the wolf packs protected their perimeters, constantly on guard at the possibility of a surprise attack at any moment. And I made myself a promise. Father or no father, if I ever saw that man again, I would avenge all those who had died at his hand.

There was only one major problem with this. My father's wolf had been an aggressive, violent spirit and once, he had been King of the Alphas. Therefore, he could manipulate the weaker Alphas into doing what he wanted- the stronger Alphas would feel extremely uncomfortable, but would be able to hold their own against him.

He could also manipulate me. We were the same blood, and my wolf was of the same spirit as his, although not as strong. It was part of the reason why I was stunned to have found my mate- I believed that my wolf's vicious nature was a curse. But unlike my father, I couldn't compel others into doing whatever I wanted. They did so out of fear and respect.

And as much as I wanted to swim in a pool of my father's blood, he had complete control of me, and could use this to his advantage whenever he wanted to. I hated that he could still hold so much power over me. It made me resent him even more.

At the strong wash of emotion, I felt my body begin to tremble and growled as I got onto all fours, resisting my wolf. The ring was on my desk, and it was too far to travel when I was so close to the Change. My nails began to change into claws and I felt my face turn into my wolf's muzzle. No. I didn't want to change right now! I clenched my jaw together and tried resisting harder, but it wasn't working. If anything, my body began to tremble even more.

Then an image of Violet entered my mind. She was coming closer, wrapping me in a tight, loving embrace murmuring something soothing that I couldn't quite make out. She was tracing circles on the back of my neck and her other hand was wrapped around my waist, holding me comfortingly.

And then she began to sing. It was mad, and irrational, but at the sound of my mate's singing, the trembling stopped for a moment. Almost as if my wolf was listening to something familiar. Then slowly, my claws began to change back into a hand. A human hand. My face begin to tingle and I reached up to place a finger on my lips in wonder.

Perplexed, I stood up and stared at my reflection in the mirror.

"What the hell?" I muttered in disbelief. I was human again.

In the background, Violet's singing still remained, soothing my wolf. He loved the sound of her voice. We loved the sound of her voice. Transfixed by the image of Violet in my mind, I fell back onto the bed wondering if it was actually Violet or if I was just imagining her. I yawned, feeling the pressure on my eyes, pulling them shut. Violet's voice followed me into my sleep, and when I dreamt, it was of Violet and a life of happiness that I had always thought was impossible.

******

I woke up to the sound of Caspian's voice.

"Sir, Alpha Bennett from the Moon pack is here. He says he won't leave until he talks with you."

Yawning, I sat up and looked outside my window. It was still dark. I glanced back at Caspian, and he shrunk backwards. A strange feeling shot through me, but I suppressed it, turning my face into a mask.

"What time is it?"

Caspian checked his watch. "4am, sir. I wouldn't have woken you up otherwise but this seemed important."

I nodded, and shot him a guarded smile. His mouth dropped open in shock, and annoyance flitted through me.

"Do you know what he wants?" I asked, pulling a shirt over my head.

Caspian looked clueless. "No, sir. He's refusing to talk to anyone but you."

Hm. Strange. "Where is he?"

"In the Chapel, sir."

Nodding, I dismissed my Beta and grabbed a jacket. Then I slipped on my ring, wanting to be prepared in case I needed it.

I stretched my neck and set off to the Chapel.
