JUST ANOTHER HALLOWEEN
' stop throwing yourself a pity party, you'll never get a boyfriend if all you do is self loathe. '

Ashley put her books in her locker and she studied her mirror. She wiped off a tiny smudge she had managed to miss earlier, and sighed. Just another school year. Finally, it was her last. She couldn't wait to escape the rules and stress of high school.
"Stop throwing yourself a pity party, you'll never get a boyfriend if all you do is self loathe." Jess shut Ashley's locker, snapping her out of her own world.
"I wasn't. I thought you weren't coming in today?" She looked at her best friend as they started to walk to treacherous hallways filled with judgements and rumours.
"I decided I'd better come in and really revel in the academic year."
"You got caught, didn't you?" Ashley said.
"Oh, Ash. Why is it so hard for you to believe that I, Jess Taylor, want to learn?" Jess dramatically raised her hand over her heart as she walked backwards to look at Ashley properly. They both giggled as Jess continued to walk backwards, eventually bumping into a denim jacket. "Sorry, my fault." Jess apologised half heartedly. The denim jacket turned to reveal sunglasses and brown, mousy hair.
"Don't worry about it." He mumbled. The bell rang, causing the hallway to empty out.

After a long day at school, Ashley threw her school bag onto her bedroom floor and stared at the ceiling. Her mom was working late, no surprise there, and she hadn't seen her dad for five years.
"Just another night watching movies with you, Lou?" She said to her cat as he walked into her room. Ashley looked at her bag and saw the bright orange invitation she had got from Jess, when she begged her to go to this party tonight at lunch. Ashley had originally declined, but had a smug grin on her face as she called her best friend.

"You're gonna need to throw some outfit together." Jess said. Ashley looked through her drawers, and found the perfect thing.
"Do you still have that orange jumper and red skirt?" She asked through the phone.
"Yeah, why? Oh my- yes! We're doing it." Jess caught on and got ready. Ashley left a note for her mom as she ran into Jess' car.

The music was so loud, it took a couple of minutes for Ashley's ears to adjust to the volume. She looked around and saw so many people.
"Okay, Daphne, let's go." Jess said to Ashley.
"You're the leader, Velma, I'm following you." Ash and Jess laughed together as they walked further in and saw some boy doing a handstand on the keg. Ashley rolled her eyes as they all chanted 'Billy' around him.  "I wonder what his name is." Ashley joked. Jess pulled her towards the punch bowl and poured herself a drink as Ashley tried to get Jess to move. She saw the same boy from before walking in their direction.
"Velma, Daphne, the names Billy. How 'bout I give you a new type of mystery to solve?" Ashley winced at the poor pick-up line, and tried to walk away, but was stopped when Billy grabbed her wrist. "I'm not gonna take no for an answer." He said, close to her ear.
"Well, you'd better because that's the answer she gave you." Sunglasses, Ashley remembered. She took a closer look and realised that this whole time sunglasses was Steve Harrington. One of the popular kids. She rolled her eyes as she realised she was being saved by someone who bullied her in her first years at high school. Billy let go, and was replaced by Jess who pulled her towards the middle of the room. They started dancing together, but Ashley couldn't get rid of this mad feeling she had inside.
