Zoe is forced to move out to Washington with her brother after their father gets into financial trouble. There she meets a local named Kurt who gives her a lesson about what it means to live.
"The girl assaulted an officer, other kid was trespassing on private property."
Kurt and I were sitting in a waiting cell beside each other not really knowing what was next. Were we gonna spend the night? Would my brother come and get me out? No one really had any idea.
"Leave it up to Theodore to have his heart in the right place but head in the gutter" Kurt muttered to himself still in cuffs.
"Hes dead to me Kurt." Was all I could say. I was fuming at my brother's actions. I thought it was supposed to be me and him forever until he does something so wild like this.
"Listen Zoe you're saying that now but. You need him hes probably coming to bail you out right now. Hopefully that's all that has to happen lord knows you can't survive in jail." Kurt laughed a bit saying the last part.
Rolling my eyes I took his hand "I'm not letting you go to jail Kurt."
We looked at each other for a second kinda just lost in each other's eyes. I could have died right there and he was right beside me it kinda felt like he was the only one to care.

We got interrupted by a woman cop who told us someone had paid BOTH of our bails and dropped the trespassing charges on Kurt. That wasn't the part that shocked me though after that she said the person just left without putting up a fight to see me.
"No way Theo bails us BOTH out and just leaves without scolding me or trying to kill you?" I said shocked.
"He's not a bad guy kid. Just a lot of bad things have happened." Kurt was being taken out of his hand cuffs and given back his belongings.
As we walked out of the jail it was still daylight and I had a decision to make.
"This is where we have to stay away from each other kid. It's in the stars that it's not meant to be" Kurt joking pointed to the sky smiling even he knew we couldn't be separated.
I laughed too but quickly got serious. "I'm not going back Kurt. What Theo said hurt. And I don't want to keep being told I can't be around you. If Theo wants me to come home he's going to have to be ok with you."
Kurt's smile faded too. "Zoe please don't ruin your life over some dude at the gas station. You got things going for you. I don't."
"I wanna change that. I don't want you sleeping under bridges in the cold. It's not right!" I protested and Kurt took a huge sigh.
"I know a place we can both go. It's warm and they'll take care of us." Kurt put his arm around my shoulder and we begin walking in the cold. I was thinking we were going to a homeless shelter so when we walked up to a drive way I was confused.
"Um who stays here?" I asked him a little nervous.
"An old friend of mine." He went knocking on the door and an older man answered the door. Kurt didn't seem to know him to well and asked was a "Vicky" here.
The man nodded and called out to her. A blonde girl who looked to be the age of Kurt much younger than this older man who answered the door came down stairs.
She addressed the man as 'babe' when she asked who wanted her.
As soon as she saw Kurt she went in for a hug. "Long time no see! Ah how have you been?" She tightly hugged him making me uncomfortable.
"Not so good vicks, see me and my friend here," he motioned to me and I let Vicky have a good look at me. She sort of looked at me like a joke. I wondered what thier relationship was to each other.
"Well we're in a jam and we need a place to stay for a bit." Kurt continued and this excited Vicky who told us to come on in. The older man quickly introduced his self as 'Michael' and shook both me and Kurt's hand.
"Of course Kurt you're welcome anytime! We have ALOT of space as you can see enough space for you guys to have separate rooms and plenty of food in the fridge!" Vicky seemed eager to separate us this whole time she never even acknowledged me or asked me for my name.
"Um actually we can take a room together. Don't really wanna freak her out by having her be alone in a new place." Kurt said what was on my mind thankfully.
Vicky laughed at this looking at me again. "Who is this?" She said not asking me but looking to Kurt.
"My name is Zoe." I answered sternly.
"Oh well nice to meet you. Me and Kurt used to date back in high school. Speaking of high school you look like you still belong there." Vicky so far was such a bitch. I can't even believe Kurt would date a girl like that.
"Enough with the teasing Vicks can you show us that room we're both tired. It's been a long day." Kurt looked at me sympathetically like this was the best I could do as far as living courters.
When we got in the room Vicky was hesitant to leave us alone but eventually she left. The house was large I'll admit. You can tell she leveled up financially by marrying Micheal who was obviously three times her age. Also Vicky was a pretty girl. Almost model pretty. I found it hard not get jealous around her when it came to Kurt for some reason. We were just friends anyways.
"What's her problem." I asked Kurt lying on the bed as he was taking his coat off.
"Vicks? That's just how she is. Always been that way. You know?"
I hated his answer. And he kept calling her "Vicks" that was his little nickname for her! I needed to calm down I had way bigger issues."
"Well how do you know her?" I asked him again but this time Kurt just seemed uninterested in the question.
"That's a question for another day kiddo. Gotta worry about taking care of you now since you're now my responsibility until Theo gets his mind back."
Kurt spoke so gently now rubbing my back as I got comfy in the king sized bed. He felt now that I was his responsibility. That he had taken Theo's place. I didn't understand why he was taken on that role of my big brother. I didn't want him to. I wanted him there just not that way.
"I'm gonna go down stairs and get some things taken care of okay?" He rubbed my leg one more time before heading for the door.
"Wait you're coming back here right to sleep?" I asked him.
He grinned hearing my worry in my voice. " of course your majesty I shall be back." Was the last thing he said befit drifted to sleep.
