Sunday, September 6
I sat at my computer, my eyes glazing over as I looked over the e-mail on the screen. A bunch of student organizations were holding events over Labor Day weekend. Technically, the weekend was mostly over, but there was still time a-wasting.
At least, that was what Mom said. She wants me to "stay involved with campus affairs," even though I'm at home. I, however, couldn't care. Campus has been out of sight, out of mind for nearly six months now. How could I work up any interest in getting involved?
Well, there was a game night being held by the Wesley Foundation this evening. I was pretty sure they were a religious organization, but that wouldn't stop me from playing some games. I clicked on the sign-up form.
That's when Anne came into the game room. "Hey, Willow," she said. "What are you up to?"
"Signing up for this game night being held by the Wesley Foundation." I brought her up to speed. "Mom wants me to do something this weekend."
"As if your homework isn't enough?" Anne commented
"It's still early in the semester. I haven't gotten to the worst of it."
Anne leaned in closer to my computer as I typed my name in the sign-up sheet. "Wait. The Wesley Foundation. Aren't they a Christian organization?"
My eyes shifted over to her. "Yeah..."
"We should let George join in!" She exclaimed.
"What do you mean 'we'?"
"You know, you and me. We should let George come along."
"Three people in front of one camera? Wouldn't that get a little crowded?"
"We can stay out of view," Anne suggested. "We'll still be able to play along, won't we?"
I shrugged. "I guess so." I scrolled down on the sign-up sheet. "There's nowhere to put names of guests, so I'll just have to explain that you're here." I clicked on the submit button. "And that does it. See you at 7:30."
Anne giggled. "You say that like we won't see each other before then."
"We won't." I got up. "I've got homework." I left the game room.
7:30 was actually four hours away, so I didn't have to wait long. Anne, George, and I were gathered in front of my computer at 7:25 so we could be there on time, and by "there," I mean "in the Zoom meeting" because nobody has gone anywhere physically since March.
I had my cursor poised over the Zoom link when Anne commented, "Uh, Willow, the event doesn't start for five minutes."
"Oh. Right." I took my cursor off the Zoom link and opened up Tumblr.
Anne furrowed her eyebrows. "That's not what I meant."
"Well, what are we supposed to do for five minutes?"
"I've heard what people say about Tumblr. I don't want George to be exposed to those sorts of things."
I glanced over at George. Then I closed the tab. Note to self: introduce George to Tumblr. If this whole "turn the dark spirit good" thing doesn't work out, at least I have a Plan B on how to influence this child.
Not really having anything else to do, I clicked on the Zoom link. The message "Please wait. The meeting host will let you in soon" appeared on the screen.
"I guess we'll have to wait," Anne conceded.
A few minutes later, the message went away, and we found ourselves in a Zoom meeting full of girls I didn't know and..."Jenny?"
