As Sophia neared it, the owlery seemed to loom above the rest of the grounds; a large black giant shadowing them into submission. It would seem scary to the girl if she hadn't been a gryffindor or visited it hundreds of times over the years. As she drew closer, a light drizzle started to soak into her hair and down her cheeks, and she lit a lumos charm to fend off the growing shadows as she got further away from the main school.
Within minutes she reached the steps and skidded slightly as she began to climb them, grasping onto the rail for support that the rainy weather threatened to take away. Whether it be snow or rain, these steps had been a continuous problem over her time at Hogwarts and were almost impossible to navigate in any weather that wasn't sunshine. It was a learned art that Sophia had perfected.
She reached the doorway at the top and was about to turn inside when she heard brutish voices within that she couldn't identify, causing her to hide in a shadow behind the door and quickly extinguish the light from her wand. Sophia wasn't the sort of person to eavesdrop on a private conversation, but there was something about the snide and snarky tones from within that told her gut to stay away. They didn't exactly seem to be the kindest people ever and there was only one of her; she was severely outnumbered. Her point was proven once she caught onto their conversation.
"I can't believe those muggle-loving idiots at the ministry still haven't put two and two together!" There was a brush of laughter from the group that caused Sophia's blood to bubble in annoyance.
"This really is a new low, even for those blood-traitors." There was a murmur of assent.
"At this rate, they'll fall easily. We won't have to wait long now."
Sophia's breath caught unpleasantly in her throat as she began to recognise voices.
"I'm joining the dark lord as soon as I leave this joke of a school."
"Mulciber," Came Narcissa Black's sharp tone, "Keep your voice down, we must ensure utmost secrecy."
"Are you scared?" Mulciber taunted back, "Big sister Bella wouldn't be too proud of that."
"Be quiet you fool." Lucius Malfoy snapped, "If you're the one that gives away the dark lord's plans then you'll have more to worry about than Bellatrix."
By now, Sophia stood in rigid shock as the realisation of the nature of their conversation dawned on her. From what she could tell they were a group of Slytherins; the same group notorious for bullying first years and insulting those who they believed to be inferior in blood status. And they were openly talking about joining and supporting the dark lord, whoever that was. It didn't surprise her that Bellatrix Lestrange (originally Bellatrix Black) was following whoever this madman was as, although she had left Hogwarts a couple of years ago, she was well known for her manic nastiness that bordered on insanity. The first memory Sophia had of her was all the way back in her first year, when she had made Lily cry after calling her a mudblood. Since then, both girls had had to learn to toughen up.
