Chapter 10: Bounce

After celebrating with family and pictures(and consoling the guys we knew from Whitewater), we headed inside to the locker room.

"HEY LISTEN UP!" Coach's voice turned 40 necks to him. "Good win tonight boys! That's how we should respond when faced with adversity like that. We got a game ball for tonight and I think we all know who it should go to."

I looked at Miles.

"The man with 3 passing touchdowns, over 300 passing yards, and no interceptions! Paddock, get up here!"
I stood up and walked to the front as the locker room erupted in cheers. Coach went back in his office and a bluetooth speaker by his door began playing our traditional post-win anthem, Bounce, by 2 Chainz. We all screamed the words as the bass tore down the house.

"Caught up in my ********, screw your head on backwards

Then skate off after, engage in laughter, bout what just happened

Fingers in napkins get sent to mammies, is that too graphic?

Catch you in traffic, you sittin back then we steal your candy

My celing's absent, my wheels are massive, my friends assassins

All of us masters, our mothers queens and our women dancers

My river's rapid, my fins are splashing, my gills are flapping,

I smoke some matches, then sip some gas and go kiss a dragon!"

"Ohhh!" We all yelled, as was customary. As the song continued, I yanked my black jersey off my shoulder pads and threw it in the washbin with the others. I did the same with my pants, slipping them off my padded shorts. Those needed a wash. I stuffed my padded shorts in my bag with my glove and headphones. I wear one glove on my non-throwing hand to help me catch the snap.

Marcus Kidworth stopped me.

"Dude, I hear Miley Tucker wants to go to prom with you."

"Never heard of her."

"She's a junior."

"How the heck do you know, mister freshman? You couldn't get good dirt if you were lying in the bed of a dumptruck."

"I have my ways, I have my people." Marcus the mafia boss turned sly eyes towards the exit, motioning for me to follow him outside the locker room. What could it hurt? Worst case scenario, Marcus is leading me towards a girl. That wasn't too bad considering we were a big school and there were plenty of girls to date if this one didn't pan out.

"Speaking of dumptrucks..." Marcus grinned. I exited the locker room in my purple workout shorts and black undershirt. I pushed my shaggy black hair away from my forehead and saw a - woah she's pretty.

"Miley!" her friend shouted before squealing. Had I forgotten to put on deodorant? Miley looked up.
"Um, hi."

"Hey."

"Um, do you wanna go to prom with me?"

"Sure."

The girls squealed even louder as I went away. I made sure to escape quickly before further antics went on.

By and large, this was a pretty good day. Had a career game, won my first game that I played meaningful downs, and got a prom date.

I checked twitter on the drive home.

When I got back home, everyone was sound asleep like usual until I strolled into my room and saw Thalia, in the corner, on her phone.

"What are you doing."

"Omegle."

"Go do that in your room."

"Caspian will hear me and you know he likes to snitch."

"Fine, stay in here, but I'm playing cod, so you may not like gunshots in your video call.

Thalia sighed, grumbled, and left. I played some COD before showering and going to bed.

When I woke up, the first thing I did was check my phone.

from Knox

You wanna go lifting with us?

Me: I'm down.

Knox: Cool. O'Riley Center. Be there at noon.

The O'Riley center? That was just an old doctors office. Nevertheless, he said lifting, so I guess they might have a dumbbell set and a barbell. I drove down the street into the city and turned into the driveway of the O'Riley center. I walked in to see a receptionist at the desk and three cards lined up on her desk. It seemed there were more, but they had been taken. I looked at my surroundings. The place had certainly been remodeled since the last time I visited, which was when I was three. It had posters of guys like Tom Brady, Deion Sanders, and Lamar Jackson on the wall.

"I take it you're a friend of Alex Iglesias?"

"Yes, yes I am."

"Name?"

"Winston Paddock."

"OK, Winston, your ID is right there, you're cleared to go." I strolled through the door where I saw a huge facility.

"Woaaaah." I said without thinking. It was the hugest gym I had ever seen. Several power-cages were lined up on the back of the wall. A huge array of different workout machines were spread throughout the room. Above, a giant walking track circled the room. I saw a padded door in the wall, so instinctively I opened it. It opened with a click and inside was a turf facility. There was a jugs machine and a rack of footballs that were the first things to catch my eyes, even before DeeDee, Geo, Blake, Knox, and nearly the whole offense.

"Hey, it's Winston!"

"There's the GOAT himself!"

"W'sup, Paddock?"

I immediately trotted under center and we began to run more plays. After that, I headed to the squat rack for a new PR.

"Gimme 3 plates and a 5." I said to Knox and DeeDee. That made 325 pounds. My legs burned all the way down and all the way back up. It was all worth it, however, when the guys crowded around me in celebration.

As I went home, my legs burned so much I could barely step on the gas. Needless to say, the rest of my Saturday was nothing but COD and eating.
