Chapter 6: Finding Him (Part 1)
After Boris leaves, the air in the room becomes thick with tension.
Valentin is confused by his shame and guilt in making the human girl fearful.
Nik doesn't understand why he feels the need to protect her.
And AnnaLee wonders why she hasn't cried yet in the presence of such deadly creatures.
Each lost in their own thoughts, the room is silent until the door opens again.
Boris enters first giving AnnaLee a dirty look she doesn't see. He would rather they kill her off as she is a liability. Boris saw the girl as a sly snake. How did she win the beta over so easily? He would refuse to fall into her trap.
After him, Alpha Maksim Lukin stepped into the room. He was anxious to see the human girl who had managed to find herself in his holding room.
His eyes met Nik's before another's. Maksim nodded his head at the beta.
Then it struck him. The purest scent he had ever had the pleasure of smelling wafted into his nose.
Then his eyes met her's, he instantly knew she was human. Maksim looked over the young lady.
Kind green doe eyes met his and widened just a fraction, but he had caught it. Soft brown hair made its way down her shoulders only to curl under her breasts. Her skin was ivory and spotless. She was sitting down but he could tell she had soft curves at her hips. My, was she a pretty little thing.
His mate.
Maksim was sure of it.
It felt like he had been staring at her for an eternity but it had been mere seconds.
Her name.
He hasn't asked for her name.
"I'm Maksim Lukin. And you might be?"
"AnnaLee Mcbride."
Why had she given him her full name? She had simply introduced herself as Anna to the rest.
AnnaLee felt breathless and she knew why.
Maksim Lukin was deadly gorgeous. His skin was set in a deep tan and his hair was dark brown. But what she really loved where his eyes. They were a golden hazel set off by his long, dark lashes.
"AnnaLee." He repeated to himself. "I'm very sorry about all if this. Is there anything I can do for you?"
The Alpha's kind words were her undoing.
"Can you please make him give me my coat back?" AnnaLee begged with tears brimming her eyes.
She knew she sounded like a child, but couldn't help it.
"Who has it?" Maksim asked. He didn't like that she was so upset. Why would someone take her coat?
Maksim watched as she pointed to Boris.
Maksim gave the Boris a heated glare. He personally didn't care for the man.
Boris handed the girl her coat at his Alpha's demand. It appeared the girl had managed to get the alpha wrapped around her finger as well.
Perhaps she was a siren. That would explain why she was getting the attention of all the males in the room.
Boris came to stand behind AnnaLee as she hugged the old coat to her.
"What are you doing on my lands, little one?"
His tone had come out much harder than he intended. Maksim didn't want his pack to know about his mate, so he had to be cool with her. His voice, however, came out frozen.
The girl stared up at him with wide eyes. AnnaLee wasn't expecting Maksim to sound so cold.
"You are quite condescending." AnnaLee said with a frown. Her tone was not laced with anger, almost as if she was just stating fact.
AnnaLee had always been told she didn't have a filter. She just spoke whatever came to mind.
Boris had heard enough. This wench comes in and immediately wins over his beta. Then she is somehow left alive and untouched after speaking to his Alpha with such disrespect. If it would have been anyone else, the alpha would have cut their tongue out.
Surely some type of witchcraft was being used and Boris was having none of it.
AnnaLee heard the slap to her soft cheek before she felt it.
Cupping her cheek she turned to Boris with a shocked expression and tears in her eyes.
"Speak to my alpha again with such little respect and I will-"
Pop.
AnnaLee heard Boris' neck twist and then saw his lifeless form drop to the floor. Alpha Lukin was standing behind the body. How did he kill him so fast?
She was stunned and could not pull her eyes away. AnnaLee just sat and stared, unmoving. She had never seen a life being taken.
It happened so quickly.
"Anna" Nik's voice called her to attention.
She did not move.
She felt the weight of someone's hand on her shoulder, but still could not move.
"Valentin, leave and get this mutt out of here while you're at it."
Maksim's voice was so close to her that AnnaLee knew the hand on her shoulder belonged to him.
She wanted to shake his hand off, but Anna feared what he might do.
Maksim looked away from his mate, and turned to Nik.
"Nik, devushka moya podruga." (Nik, the girl is my mate.-Russian)
Had AnnaLee just heard him correctly? She tried to keep her face neutral as if she didn't understand. This way, she would know what was going on.
"Eto imeyet smysl. YA srazu pochuvstvoval zashchitnuyu funktsiyu. YA nachal zadavat' sya voprosom, byla li ona moya podruga." (That makes sense. I immediately felt protective. I was starting to wonder if she was my mate.-Russian) Nik said with a teasing smile. He looked to AnnaLee and winked at her.
AnnaLee tried to look as confused as possible, but couldn't help her blush.
As Anna did this, she noticed how Maksim's jaw clenched and he seemed to stiffen.
"Ona dolzhna byt' vasha Luna." (she is to be your luna-Russian)
Then, Maksim grabbed AnnaLee's chin and looked at her for a bit, assessing her injured cheek, before continuing in english, "That is the reason for your feelings."
Nik smirked. He knew how to get under the alpha's skin.
"Ona ochen' krasiva, ne tak li?" (She's quite beautiful, no?-Russian)
AnnaLee went stiff upon hearing this. Her actions did not go unnoticed by Maksim, who bent down in front of her, with his brow furrowed.
"I nevinnoy?" (and innocent?-Russian) Nik continued.
AnnaLee's eyes went wide at the mention of her innocence. She knew what he was trying to imply.
Maksim pulled away from her immediately and ran his fingers through his hair. The girl was smart, he would give her that.
"Sie weiss, Russisch." (she knows russian-german) Maksim stated, this time in German, looking at Nik.
"Was?" (what?-german) Nik replied with wide eyes. His cheeks turning red. They both turned to look at the girl.
"Ich Bin fliebend Deutsch und Russisvh." (I'm fluent in both German and Russian) AnnaLee said as she gave them a weak smile.
