Chapter 18: The Catalyst

Maksim stared at the door she walk out of... The door she used to walk out on him.

How could she have done this?

Had he really been that difficult?

Maksim knew he had been.

But isn't this what he had wanted all along?... For her to not want any part of him or his life? For her to leave?

That's what he kept telling himself... that he didn't want her.

But now, Maksim realised how wrong he was. He wanted her more than anything. He craved her and that's what truly scared him.

The alpha had never needed anyone. From the time he was young, he had to rely on himself.

Did he love his family? Yes, but he had never needed them.

But everything was different with Anna. He knew he needed her.

He just didn't know how much until she walked out of his door.

Maksim's thoughts were put aside as he felt something sticky and wet.

Looking down, he saw that his arm was covered in blood.

Maksim knew that his claws were extending into the meaty flesh of his palm.

He could feel the beast in him coming to life.

Maksim knew he had to gain control, but he couldn't.

The more he tried to push his natural form down, the more it rose up.

Maksim couldn't help but blame his current state on Anna.

Before she arrived, he had no problems with control.

Now she was gone and he was left to deal with the crazed wolf inside him.

Maksim had known all along he was a danger to Anna. She was what triggered his wolf to be so unpredictable, but she was also what allowed him to find control.

She was what kept him tame.

Without her, nothing could stop him from changing.

His bones creaked and bent in unnatural ways. His skin was burning and his blood boiling.

He could see the veins in his hand turning black.

No, this wasn't like anything he had experienced before.

Maksim was frightened even though he knew what was happening.

He was becoming the ravenous animal he was destined to be.
