Mrs. R looked up at the orange sky as she walked out of the antique store. This was the fifteenth place she visited that day and she still couldn't find it. How difficult could it be to find a simple brooch? She understood that it was the most important thing in the world to her mother, and she was the most important thing to Mrs. R, so she had no choice but to obey her, even from beyond. However, it was too late to visit a sixteenth store and she was way too old to do that. Ms. R walked to the bus stop with a frown, like she usually did when she thought too much about something that didn't make sense. He sat down on the rusted bench and put her purse next to her. - "Why didn't my mother have her most precious object in her possession and why should I look for it?" -
She waited for several minutes, apparently the bus was late. The sky began to darken more and more, and the lights of the bus stop turned on. Few cars went down that street due to the number of people walking by, but at that time there was hardly anyone left. Another 10 minutes passed, and Mrs. R saw lights approaching. She stood with her pass in hand, but as soon as she did, her vision blurred and she fell to the floor. Her world went black and she heard someone asking for help, the last thing she felt was someone holding her hand.
Upon awakening she was blinded by the white of the room where she was and by the sun that came in from the window. Her head ached as if he had been hit with her purse nonstop the entire trip from the bus stop. She drank the glass of water she had on the table next to her bed and was pouring herself a second glass when a doctor entered with a serious and concerned face. She had seen that expression on the faces of her mother's doctors several times, enough to know what it meant.
- "How much time do I have?" - She asked.
The doctor took a second to respond in a sad tone, - "24 hours if treatment is not done immediately, if it is done, you will have a maximum of 9 months to live." -
- "Too soon" - thought Mrs. R. - "What is the treatment?"-
- "They're simple pills, but they are expensive, too expensive" -
- "That brooch is expensive; I won't be able to afford both" -
She looked at the doctor with a determined face and told the doctor to discharge her, she said goodbye and got dressed. The hospital bill was zero due to her "condition" and they offered to pay for her taxi as well. At her age, 24 hours and 9 months had no difference. That brooch was her mother's dying wish, and know it was hers too.
The next morning, they found Mrs. R cold in her bed, with an equally cold brooch in her hand and a warm smile on her face.
Instructions: As with the first assignment, you will create another scene where someone wants a concrete physical object more than anything else in the world. This time, instead of focusing on rising action entirely, consider the full story structure.
Write for a few minutes, then give that character a disease where they learn they have only 24 hours to live. This is your first significant rising action.
Write some more, then give that character a choice between that object and an antidote. This is your second significant rising action.
Finish the story with a conclusion. Your final story should not exceed 500 words.
