Chapter 5- Indiana
Wow. That girl can scream. She stormed off, and I could practically see steam coming out of her ears. I've seen her around school before, but I've never talked to her before today. Being honest, I'm a little bit mad at myself that I haven't. She's a spitfire if I've ever seen one. Kinda cute too. I'm pretty sure Becca hates her, though I'm not 100% sure why. Maybe it had something to do with that guy Alexis or whatever his name is?
I got so wrapped up in my thoughts, that I didn't notice that my parents had caught up with me.
"Indi? Are you alright?"I whirled around to see my mom looking at me with slight concern. I gave her my signature smirk.
"Why wouldn't I be? Come on Ma when am I not fine?" I smiled and gave her a little nudge to let her know I was fine. She smiled back and continued walking toward the Fury's' house. My dad was coming up behind me, so I knew I had to get a move on unless I wanted to get lectured about politics or some shit.
As I walked up to the front stairs, I heard some faint singing accompanied by a guitar. I wasn't sure if it was my imagination or not, but whatever it was would have to wait until after dinner. And something in my gut was telling me this was going to be an interesting dinner.
I took the stairs 2 at a time, random thoughts floating around in my brain. Ma had already gone inside and was talking to Mrs. Fury. They seemed to be gossiping about something they saw on Facebook or whatever moms talk about. A hand came down on my shoulder and I jumped a mile as my dad started talking to me.
"You will never find any greater enigma than a woman son. Never." He chuckled to himself, then headed inside.
I shook my head and followed him. The sight I was meet with was a brilliant one. Dark wood lined the walls, floors, and ceiling, and a huge front staircase was right on front of me. A few lamps illuminated the foyer, giving it a more classic look. Two archways were on my left and right, the one on the left leading to a dining room and the one on my right leading to a living room. This whole place just left homey and welcoming. She would've loved this place...
"Mom! I can't find Lea!" A little boy around maybe 6 or 7 came bolting down the stairs and over to his mom. A brunette girl around my age followed him and over to Mrs. Fury.
"I have no clue where she went. Sorry Mrs. F." She said with a shrug. By the looks of her fidgety body language, she knew exactly where Lea was, she was just covering for her. But Mrs. Fury just scowled, buying into the fib. She mumbled something before storming off, very similarly to how Lea did earlier. Well now I see where she gets it from. I headed into the dining room where this was all happening and tapped the brunette girl's shoulder. She whirled around, her hair hitting my face and in my mouth. I sputtered a little bit to get it all out of my mouth before earning a death glare. If looks could kill, I would be six feet under right now. Clueless as to why was getting the hairy eyeball from someone I've never met before, I played the teasing playful type, in hopes to get on her good side.
"Whoa, nice weapon you've got there. You better be careful with it though. You don't want to hurt any innocent bystanders." I said with my killer smile and a slight chuckle.
"Is that supposed to be funny or something?" She replied coldly. Ok. Teasing, playful guy, clearly not her type. Point for brunette chick. Mr. Nice Guy type maybe?
"More or less yeah. Can I get a name at least?" I asked sweetly, still flashing my killer smile.
"You should know my name." the girl scoffs. "I do, after all, go to the same school you do. I have for a while, actually."
Well fuck.
"We actually have Algebra 2 together." the girl continues. "I sit right in front of you."
Well I feel like a dumbass. I ran every face of every girl I knew through my mind, but I wasn't coming up with any matches. I was so fucked.
"Zoe. My name is Zoe. You dumbass. And you wonder why people like Lea and I hate you?"
"Wait you're friends with Lea?" I chirped, genuinely curious as to how these two really hot and interesting chicks completely managed to escape being at least known in my life. She groaned and rolled her eyes as if I was asking the dumbest question on the planet. Then something clicked into place as I remembered a rumor involving two girls, one of them being named Zoe.
"No way!" I exclaimed, "You're the lesbian!"
"WHAT!?" She screeched.
"There was a rumor going around a year or two ago about two best friends secretly dating or something. That had to be you!" I continued. Zoe looked pissed. And by pissed I mean she looked ready to tear my head off.
"Well, I am not a lesbian," She said so calmly it terrified me, "And I'm debating whether or not to murder you right now. And right now I'm leaning towards yes."
I cringed as she gave me a more evil stare than before. I needed some leverage here, and I had just the thing.
"You know where Lea is, don't you?" I said, much more weakly than I would've preferred. But it must've been enough, because she stopped staring quite so evilly at me. It turned into more of a "I'm not lying what are you talking about pshh *sweats*" look. Relieved that she didn't look ready to murder me anymore, I pressed a little bit further.
"Why not tell her mom? Clearly she wants to find her, so why not help?" I questioned.
She didn't reply. Instead, she looked deep in thought, as if she were actually going to tell me.
"It's not my story to tell." she replied.
"Lea!? Come here this instant, or I'll send you home for the rest of the summer! Without Zoe!!" Mrs. Fury barked from the other room. I had a feeling that I never wanted to get on this woman's bad side. I could only imagine the damage she and my mom can do if they teamed up... A shiver went down my spine at the thought.
"Mom chill! You'll scare the guests." A familiar voice shouted. Lea marched into the room scowling. She must really not want to be dealing with this anymore than I do. When she saw me, her scowl got even more intense and I started to think that her face would be like that forever.
"You can scare him away all you would like though." She grumbled.
Mrs. Fury glared at her daughter and stormed over to her. I honestly thought she was going to burst into flames with rage. But what happened was more terrifying that and. Much more terrifying.
"We've been looking for you!" She said with a smile. It was clearly forced, but if you just walked in on the situation, you would never know.
"Ok I get it. Now shouldn't you get back to making dinner or something? I set the table earlier so don't start berating me about that." Lea replied. The scowl on her face had been replaced with a look of hatred. It was scary honestly. How can girls manipulate their facial expressions and emotions so easily?
Mrs. Fury sighed. And gave Lea a hug. It seemed a little random, but I didn't question it. She pulled back. looked her daughter in the eyes, then whirled around and headed to where I assumed was the kitchen.
I felt two pairs of eyes burning into me and I glanced over at Zoe, then over to Lea. They did not seem pleased about me being here. But why? It was finally time to address the elephant in the room.
"What did I do?" I asked, throwing my arms up in the air.
The two girls looked at each other, having some kind of conversation that I was a part of, nor would I ever be. It was Lea who finally replied.
"If you can't figure that out, then you're seriously stupid."
And with that, Lea and Zoe marched off.
