What are clones you say? Well, it's basically you. Your clone will be in your CR while you yourself are in your DR.
Unless you DO want a clone, don't script that you will have a clone while in your DR. If you are paranoid about what the clone will do, like embarrass you, do dumb things, and have to deal with it when you come back, don't worry. As the clone will perfectly act and look just like you. There will be no difference between the two.
Shifting at night is highly recommended as you will likely wake up in the morning back to your CR. But you can shift whenever you want to.
