the white haired girl placed the chopped wood into the fire. watched it burn into intensity that glowed an orange nearly as bright as ginny's hair. but, still, never matching adele's favourite red.
the witch on the couch awoke to adele sitting by the fire. gazing into it like it was her life purpose.
ginny sat by her, leaning her head on adele's shoulder. the shoulder she had cried into so many nights because of the empty pit in her heart that only adele seemed to fill. the shoulder she had trailed kisses down with a delicacy only ginny could endeavour, sighed breathes from those nights shared together.
'hey.' her voice soothed adele, even with just one word.
with a sigh, she rested her head atop ginny's. placed a kiss on her forehead, such delicacy with the act.
'it will get better, you know that right?' adele wished she could believe her words, but she knew that they were just an empty promise. like their life away from everything.
'you don't know that, adele,' the ginger sighed wearily, 'there's nothing left of this world.' she brought her head away from the witch's shoulder. looked away to hide her tears, she spoke in a whisper, 'at times, it seems that all hope is lost. maybe i should just give up.'
adele's heart broke at ginny's words. but, if they were to give up ─ give in ─ they would do so together. they would dance as the world burned like the ache in their hearts for each other.
adele stood. ginny looked back to her lover, her friend, with the face of an angel. an angel that has been through so much ─ too much.
with a flick of her hand, music started to play. a gorgeous melody that hummed throughout the cabin.
'dance with me, love.'
slowly, ginny rose to her feet. wiped her last tears from her eyes before going into adele's arms. welcoming. comforting.
safe.
'take my hand. listen to the music. do this for me, ginny. do this for you.'
and so she did. she placed her hand into adele's, being pulled close. just like all those nights where it was just the two of them, finding nothing but comfort in each other.
adele wrapped her arms around ginny's waist, pulling her closer than before. feeling she needed to be closer.
that close would never be enough. adele needed to be completely consumed by ginny. by their growing love. nothing else would do.
they swayed to the music as the world wilted away. as tragedy struck. if this was all they had, it would be enough.
when ginny rested her head against adele's chest, she could feel the slight smile playing at the gingers lips as they danced.
they stayed in their embrace, even as the music wilted away. even when night came, they stayed in each other's arms. holding on like it was the only thing left.
'i love you, ginny. we'll get through this. remember my promise, we'll get it eventually.'
the ginger pulled back, looking deeply into the grey eyes above her.
'i love you, adele. more than anything.'
the world would wilt, that was sure. but their love never would.
