so they left.
they left that small cabin that held all their memories and burdens, what felt like the weight of the world.
they left the comfort. the peace.
the safety.
everything was left behind; abandoned.
took hold of each other's hand, drifted with the wing till they landed on the stones they knew too well.
the stones in which they had run on. the stones that covered the floors of the halls they shared those few special moments in.
they were there.
and they were ready.
time passed, like it did at the cabin. slow and methodical. torturous.
when he finally arrived, the chosen one in all his glory, that is when it had begun.
at the beginning, everything seemed fine. the beginning of the world's downfall. but not the end.
not yet.
then, the voice came. the one of the name they would not ― could not ― speak. like a snakes whisper, it slithered across the walls. rang in their ears.
then everything went to hell.
masked and cloaked in the devils wear, they stormed the castle. wreaking death upon anyone they deemed fit.
colors and lights flashed through the halls. across the walls. throughout the court yard.
adele protected the skies, along with many others. they would do it; they could do it.
but then it broke. shattered. safety wilted before her eyes, falling down.
down.
down.
she ran back into the castle. desperate to find the ginger witch. instead, she found something worse.
fred.
laying against the wall. wilted castle surrounded him. blood trickled down his face, pooling into crimson on the stone.
adele ran over to him. pushed the crumbled castle aside.
'freddie, stay with me. come on.'
tears welled in her eyes, she recognized so much of ginny in him. the hair, mostly.
his eyes drifted open then shut. open. shut. open. shut.
breath became heavy. stilled.
'no, no. no! stay with me fred, just keep your eyes open.'
and he did, but she knew they wouldn't remain that way. not for long.
'tell georgie i'll miss him. that i'll be watching, so i expect him to do a lot of stupid shit.' the whisper of a smile spread across his trembling lips. 'tell my family i love them, especially ron. i don't say it enough.'
a tear fell down his cheek. pained and trying.
'adele, you have to promise me something, okay?'
she nodded her head, tears now a downpour of agony.
'take care of her. take care of our ginny. she will want to leave, i know it. go with her. she needs you.'
'i will, don't worry. i'll never leave her. i'm so sorry, fred.'
then, the last words of fred weasley . . .
'ginny loves you. she always has, even if she didn't know it. she loves you more than anything, adele.'
and with that, his eyes remained shut. his breath ceased. his hair so bright against his now cold, pale skin.
that smile, though. she would never forget that smile.
