Ricky Montgomery explains the meaning of the song as:
"This song sets the stage for the album and functions as a thesis statement for an album about self acceptance. While the song is outwardly preoccupied with the bad parts of oneself (wondering why in the hell I want to be a singer in the first place when so many artists end up being bad people, for example; a theme explored further in the song's music video), it ultimately seeks out hope for the future. It suggests people can change. This December, I'll remember where I came from, as I always do. But I'll be better this year, and I want you to know that I did that. Or maybe just because I want a narrative to convince myself I'm the hero in my story and not just another chapter in a cautionary tale."
The song starts off a little slowly before picking up right before the chorus begins. This is a great use at the start of the album as it draws you in to hearing the rest of the song. The lyrics are also very catchy.
The lyrics:
"I'm alright if you're alright
And I'm okay if you're okay
It's this state in this state I'm living in"
Are extremely relatable to some people which allows for a deeper connection to Ricky's music.
My favourite lyrics within the song is:
"Only in my darkest moments
I wanna see you with your head wide open
Empty in the ground, gone without a sound"
I don't really know why this is my favourite part of the song, maybe because it has a certain feel to it and I'm a weirdo towards crime/murder.
Overall I would rate This December a good 8/10 for me. Of course I love the song however there are other songs in the album that I enjoy listening to more.
