Chapter Six:

We walked outside the cabin. Snow was now gently falling on the ground. Through the cracks of the trees,  I could see gray clouds. I hoped the snow would keep up. It would erase all the scents from when Meo and I met. Hopefully, Daray and Ginger wouldn’t get that far.

I looked over at Meo. He was walking with his eyes glued to the ground, almost nervously. His hands were stuffed into his pockets. He was wearing a grey knit cap that was covering the curly mop of hair on his head, although I didn’t know why. It wasn’t like he could feel the cold. None of us could. I noticed that his eyes were filled with sorrow and worry. I understood the worriedness but not the sadness. I waited for him to speak and maybe explain why but he never did.

“How long have you been here?” I asked, unable to take the silence anymore. His eyes flicked upwards for a split second but then they averted downwards.

“Eighty years this May.” He said.

“You have always lived here?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. Eighty years was a long time to stay in one place. I mean I was ready to kill myself after staying with Daray after only a few days. But then again, when it comes to forever, how long is a long time?

“No, I spent a few years with another coven before I came to this one.” Every single word was guarded, like one word, one mistake could tear him down.

What other covens are there? How many? Were there many other covens besides this one and Daray’s? I asked him.

“No there are only two with the exception of a handful of nomads.” Meo said, his head looking up hard in the distance. I did the calculations in my head. That meant he was with Ginger and Daray. That couldn’t be right. Meo seemed like he could never do the evil things they could do and did, what I did. But then again, what did I know about him?

“You lived with Daray and Ginger?” I asked, unable to stop the words from flowing out like a faucet.

“What does it matter? I’m not there anymore.” Meo said, almost angry. I felt so embarrassed and humiliated. I hadn’t been here an hour and I already offended the boy who basically saved me.

“Yeah,” I said, so low I doubted anybody, even a vampire could hear it. No words were spoken after that.

Endless amounts of cabins littered these snow covered woods. Sometimes we went a few miles without seeing a cabin. Where was he taking me? This coven couldn’t be this big? Could it? Daray and Ginger said this coven was small and easily defeat able. Unlike theirs which consisted of thousands of powerful vampires all over the world. By my count, there was at least a hundred vampires here. Who knew how many there was around the world?

Just as that thought floated through my head, I heard the soft swish of one of the tree branches and then the soft thud of someone landing behind us. I whirled around, crouching as the snowy forest became a visible blur. My lip curled up, exposing my sharp teeth, glinting from some unknown light source. Growls rippled through my chest, making me sound anything but human. I looked up to see it was a young girl, no older than fourteen. She had short, wispy blond hair that frame her angelic face. Her strangely electric blue eyes emitted a warmness and friendliness. I noticed her extremely pale skin that made the snow on the ground look gray and that no beat came from her still chest. She wasn’t a human girl. She was a vampire.

“Slow your roll, Lacey.” Her voice was slightly higher than mine but just a musical. “I’m a good guy. My name is Lela and I’m also your cabin mate.” I stood up with teeth still bared, almost as warning to her. Glancing up at Meo, I looked for any signs of danger. He nodded his head, verifying her story. I loosened up.
