"𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐥, lyra--"

"i really need someone."

"it's two in the morning," davies groaned. "listen, we can do it tomorrow after class, but--"

"i don't want sex. i just want someone to hold me," lyra muttered.

"come here, gorgeous." he held up one corner of his comforter, giving her an opening to slide under. he began caressing her cheek with one hand and playing with her hair with the other. "what happened?"

"nightmares."

"again? i'm sorry, angel, how can i help?" he asked her, but she had already dozed off. roger was her only safe space, so when she came to him in the middle of the night, like she so frequently did, he made sure to hold her tight. lyra was a very strong witch, mentally. she was very good at putting on a face to cover the pain that she had been through as a child. even going home for the summer was painful for her. although her family wasn't pureblood, that didn't mean they weren't bad people. she remembered last year when harry potter said that the world isn't split into good people and death eaters. or something like that.

roger met lyra in their first year. they had had a majority of their classes together, but didn't become friends until one night where they were both in the common room alone in the middle of the night. lyra had had one of her nightmares, and roger was, of course, studying. he couldn't concentrate in his dormitory, so he found himself sitting in front of the fire in the common room talking to the girl that he would soon come to learn to love.

now, they had never loved one another as anything more than friends. though they would hookup from time to time, lyra and roger were just friends. and that was it. they found each other to be an outlet for their problems. well, davies had also found quidditch, but he wasn't going to be oliver wood about it and obsess over it. when he couldn't vent through lyra, he'd find a way to play quidditch. and when he couldn't get to lyra or quidditch... well, that was an experience that neither of them wanted to go through again.

this fling started the year before, in fifth year. they had both had really horrible summers, to be quite frank, and they really just needed to get it out of their systems. before they knew it, they were in roger's empty dorm room while everyone else was at the first-day-of-school feast. it was only supposed to be a one-time thing. actually, it wasn't really supposed to happen at all. it just sort of became a relatively frequent occurrence. sometimes a little too frequent. but they were safe about it. they only got with each other, and they had a rule that if they got with anyone else, they would tell one another. though, this rule was quite irrelevant, since they were each others' firsts, and they hadn't actually gotten with anyone else.

their relationship wasn't entirely friends with benefits, though. the two confided in each other quite often. they were the best of friends and they were always there for each other. they had never actually fought. there would be a little bit of bickering here and there, but other than that, they got along very well. lyra used to love cheering him on at his quidditch games, until fourth year when roger finally convinced her to try out for the team. of course, she made it, making her one of ravenclaw's best beaters yet. they were quite disappointed that there would be no quidditch this year, but they would manage.

"pevensie, come down here!"

"frederick, i'm not doing it."

"i wasn't going to ask you to do anything," he said from the bottom of the staircase. "and it's not frederick."

"okay, romeo."

"oh, that ones new," he said when she reached the bottom. they began walking together to the great hall. "i have a proposition for you."

"and what would that be?"

"if you help us put our names into the goblet of fire, i'll let go of what happened in second year."

"i shouldn't have to do anything for you to move on from that," she scoffed. he looked at her expectantly. "what are the magic words?"

"please?" he groaned.

"fine. but i'm not putting it in there for you."

"YES! oh, i could kiss you!"

"please don't." and with that, lyra walked past him and sat down at her usual breakfast spot beside roger and across from thea. roger looked up at her and smiled.

"i'm sorry about last night," she whispered to him.

"don't be. i slept better last night than i did all summer," he replied, eating his scrambled eggs. she smiled at him, silently thanking him for the comfort he had provided her with the night before. "anyways, i can't believe that it's already october. are the two of you going to hogsmeade today?"

"yeah, sure. i don't have any money, but i'd love to walk around," she said, filling her plate with jelly biscuits.

"i'm gonna keep my butt in bed while the weekend lasts." thea never really favored hogsmeade. she didn't think that anything down there was worth her time.

"alright, miss pevensie, i'll pick you up downstairs at ten o'clock," he said properly. lyra laughed and nodded and they went about the rest of their breakfast in peace.

by the time they had finished eating, most of the great hall had cleared out. there were only a few other people in there by the time they left. roger, as the ravenclaw quidditch captain, had a meeting with professor flitwick right after breakfast, so they parted ways after they left the great hall.

"what did fred weasley want from you?" thea asked lyra as they made their way to the common room.

"him and george are bugging me about helping them put their names into the goblet of fire. i said no when they asked me on the first day of school, but fred made me a deal that if i helped them, he would get over what happened back in second year. i figured no harm could come to me from that, so i agreed. i refused to put it in the goblet myself, though."

"oh alright. so what are you going to do?"

"probably brew up a potion or something. i'm not sure yet."

"try an aging potion. that would more than likely be your best bet," her friend suggested. thea was an amazing student when it came to potions and charms.

"i'll look into it. i'll likely need your help getting the recipe though," lyra replied.

"okay, i'll go to the library while you and roger are in hogsmeade."

"thanks, thea, i really appreciate it. i still don't know why fred hasn't just gotten over it already. it wasn't even that big of a deal."

"i don't know. boys are weird. i don't know how you're attracted to men."

"honestly, thea... i don't know either."
