The next day I woke up on the couch and found myself covered with a thin cover. I didn't even brush my teeth last night. I smelled my breath when I put my hand over my mouth and let out a huff just to confirm my thoughts and of course it smelled like rotten food in there. I had to brush them every night because I suffered from a bad breath problem. I pulled off the cover and sat up. My grandparents were sitting in the kitchen eating breakfast. I stood up from the couch and made my way towards them. My hair was probably a mess and my eyes were swollen.
"Good morning" I said and grabbed a glass of water from the table and took a sib.
"Good morning" they said in unison.
"Come and eat your breakfast" my grandpa said.
"I'll go to the bathroom first" I said and put the glass down. I turned around and as I did I glanced at the clock hanged on the wall.
"It's 10:45. Why didn't you wake me up to go to school?" I said
"Must have not noticed" my grandma said with a sly smile.
"Guess I am not going to school then" I said chuckling.
"Guess not" my grandpa said and gave me s small smile.
"I washed your cloth by the way. They will be dry in an hour" she said and turned around to put an empty plate into the sink.
I decided to take a walk after I have taken my dry cloth from grandma. I took a cheese sandwich from the fridge and went on to my walk. I kept walking as aimlessly as I did yesterday hoping it will lead me somewhere different but it ended up leading me where I went yesterday, that house. This time I stood by it. I didn't move or even twitch. I just stood outside the yard and stared at it. I closed my eyes for one second and when I opened my eyes again, it was on fire. The house was on fire the same it looked that night. I blinked twice. I thought I was dreaming but I wasn't. It was real. It was burning. I ran as quickly as I can away from the house. I ran and I ran and when I finally stopped, I was out of breath. I bend down and put my hands on my knees. I was breathing like a thirsty dog. My eyes almost teared up but I didn't know if it was from the excessive breathing or seeing the house on fire.
I took a few steps forward and breathed slowly. I shook my head slightly. "It can't be real, you idiot. You are just too much into your own head." My inner me said which was interrupted by someone calling my name.
"Trent?" a female voice said unsure.
"Trent eastwood?" she asked.
I looked up. "Umm, Yes"
"Wow, I didn't know you lived here" she said.
I stood up and took a nice look at her. She had brownish partly blonde hair pulled into a ponytail. She was wearing a pink sleeveless t _shirt striped with white and jeans. She had wide smile. I didn't know her though.
"I don't. Have we met before?" I asked.
"Sure we did. You just don't notice like ever" she rolled her eyes but still with a smile on her face as she made her way towards me.
"Sorry. I am Trent. Wait, you already know that" I said and put my hand out but then withdrew it after saying the second part of the sentence.
"Cathy. I am in rosebud high school with you. In most of your classes, actually" she said this time putting her hand out. I took it and I smiled sheepishly.
"If you don't live here then what are you doing here? Don't lie, I know you are skipping school" she said putting her finger out jokingly.
"I am visiting my grandparents. I know you are skipping school, too so what is the deal?" I said.
"My little sister is sick. I am taking her of her" she said nodding.
"How do you know me?" I asked curious.
"You are pretty famous" she said chuckling.
I lowered my head knowing exactly what she was talking about. She noticed and then said
"It's not like that. You are always famous even before the ……"she trailed off and looked away. She seemed to have her wrong choice of words day.
"Anyway" she continued and looked up at me" I am here .you are here. How about we go hangout a little? I have nothing to do" she suggested. I nodded. It's not like I had anything to do.
"Well come on " she gestured with her whole hand for me to come walk beside her.
"Most people aren't friendly like that unless you are some sort of prank and trying to trick me" I said and put my hands in the pocket of my jeans.
" no don't worry" she chuckled" I guess I am not into high school rumors. They are usually made up because someone is revenging from someone. I know that for sure"
"Yeah" I said in an agreeing tone.
We talked for a long while. She was cool. I liked that she didn't treat me differently. About three hours passed, I didn't even notice until I brought out my phone to see if there are any missed calls from the family. It went so easy and so fast. It was 1 Pm.
"So listen, I have to go check on my sister. She is probably awake by now. How about I see later today? Let's say in two or three hours maybe?" she asked and turned to me waiting for my answer.
"Let's make them 2 hours. Tell your sister to get better" I said smiling.
"I'll try. I'll meet you here, okay?" She said and smiled as she turned away. She walked away. I watched her for 3 seconds before I turned to my own way. It was nice, talking to somebody besides my family which I wouldn't consider talking. I haven't talked to anyone. I went home and ate another sandwich and then at 2 hours later, I went to hang out at the same place we agreed to meet.
She came after me with 30 minutes smiling. She was wearing the same cloth but with a black cardigan on top. She said there's an ice cream shop nearby and that she really wants some ice cream because it wasn't allowed in the house since her sister is sick. I learned that she likes vanilla flavor with mangos. I ordered chocolate.
"I didn't do it, you know." I said as I took a spoon of my ice cream.
"Do what?" she asked confused. I took a breath.
"Burn the house" I said sighing.
"I would be lying if I said I believe you but I would be lying, too if I said I don't" she said
I furrowed my eyebrows.
"What is that supposed to mean?" I asked confused.
"Well, you are too much of the good guy to do it yet not rational enough not to" she said.
"Huh" I said understanding where she came from.
"Then who did it if you didn't?" she said.
"I can't say. Let's change the subject, yeah?" I said.
"Okay, so what is your favorite movie?" she asked after a minute of silence.
"Well, there's 'wanted' and '23'. They are my top favorite" I said
"Oh, interesting. I like Moulin rouge"
"It's a good movie, good plot." I said taking another spoon of my Ice cream.
"I know, right?" she said exclaiming with a spoonful of ice cream in her mouth
She then asked me about my favorite book and things kicked from there. We talked about school, music and actors/actresses. We talked until it was it was time for me to go home. I said
"I had fun. We should do it again"
"Totally" she smiled.
"Bye" I waved.
"Bye" she waved back.
I walked to my grandparents after so I can get my bag and then go home.
