Chapter Twenty Five

Destiny?

Sarah decided to go up to her room. Outside her door she remembered how her stuff had been gone through a few days earlier. She held her breath as she opened the door, and was stunned to find that everything had been put back. Quickly she browsed through her things and discovered only her Bible missing. That was okay though. She already knew what she had to do.

Looking down at her bed she noticed the picture that Christopher had given her. She couldn’t believe how fast time had flown. She suddenly wished she never heard of these woods. Maybe then, things would have turned out better.

Feeling home sick, she decided to go for a walk, to try and clear her head. She walked over to the closet, looked for a light jacket. Instead, she found a white wedding dress. It was so beautiful, and appeared to be her size. On the front there was a note, which read,

Sarah, I expect this will be to your liking. Bring it with you when you meet me at the beech. Love, Christopher P.S. I haven’t seen the dress either. I wouldn’t want to overstep any superstitious practices you may have. I simply wrote the note and the seamstress pinned it on.

Grabbing the dress and her jacket she walked back down to the beech and waited for Christopher. This way, she’d be in a quiet place to concentrate and figure out what to do.

Sarah took her time getting down to the beach. She was in no hurry to get to the synagogue, and there was less than an hour for her to come up with a plan. She knew if she didn’t show up, they would probably harm Chasity. If she did go, she might be forced to join them.

Still, conflicted about what to do She hung her dress on a low tree branch and started to lightly jog around the large pond. It wasn’t very big, but it would take her a while to circle it. Maybe she’d be able to figure out something before Christopher arrived to take her to the synagogue.

When she got to the other side, she sat down on the shore and took a break. Looking up at the sky, she noticed the moon was getting close to the sun. It would be dark soon and the ceremony would be starting. As she got up to finish her jog, she saw something out of the corner of her eye. The woods on this side of the water were much darker compared to where she started. She could see torches lining a pathway and being the curious kind of person she was, she decided to find out where they led.

The trail was long and steep, but after a while, she finally reached the top. There, in the distance was a large building, which appeared to be an old church. At first, Sarah didn’t think there was anybody there, but with a closer look, she saw shadows moving slowly passed the inside windows. Figuring this was the synagogue Christopher was talking about, Sarah decided to quietly go over and get a closer look.

Staying just out of sight, in the nearby bushes, she saw a line of people walking, one by one into the building. They were dressed in red robes, and their heads were covered by large hoods. On the front she could see black upside down crosses. It creaped her out but she still Wanted a better look. At the risk of getting caught, she walked in behind the last person, and to her surprise, nobody seemed to notice.

She followed in suite up a flight of stairs. When she reached the fifth floor, she noticed the outside wall was gone and there was nothing to keep her from falling. Looking more carefully, Sarah saw a metal construction beam protruding from the side of the building. At the end of the beam, tied with rope, and hanging far above the ground, was her friend Chasity. From the looks of it, she was unconscious. As she turned to continue her journey up the stairs she bumped into someone.

“Oh, sorry.” She apologized.

Then, she noticed it was Christopher. He was dressed in a white robe, and it also had the same upside down cross on the front. Suddenly, she became fearful and didn’t know what to say.
