a sharp pain in your shoulder jolts you awake. you obviously slept on the wrong side of the bed because your entire left side of your body seems sore and aching, and all you want to do is get something in your system as your stomach is nearly making you double over in pain. late-night escapades with new friends are fun, but the morning after has always been a pain. a headache makes you dizzy and hard to keep your balance, but after a minute or so, you're able to stand and walk around without too much of a struggle.you stumble to your kitchen, grabbing aimlessly for a glass in your cupboards and filling it with water so you can easily get an ibuprofen in your system to calm the headache. you then make your way to your fridge, grabbing one of the boxes of cereal on top, then begrudgingly grabbing the milk. you walk over to the counter, grabbing a bowl, pouring the cereal, pouring the milk, then grabbing a random spoon out of the drawer. breakfast is served. you eat at one of your tables, realizing you don't have any coffee beans left to make yourself any, so it seems like another gas station trip going to have to happen this morning.
finishing your cereal, you walk to your sink, placing your now dirtied dish in the sink and stretching your arms out. you head back to your bedroom to get ready to head out and grab some cheap coffee, when you realize something. that girl- rae- still has my jacket. well, i guess i'm gonna be a little chilly today. you change into a long-sleeve and put on your shoes, grabbing your wallet and keys, then heading out the door and onto the set path you have in the mornings and nights were you need the sweet and bitter taste of gas station coffee.
upon arriving, you're hit with a wave of memories form last night of adventures in the park and chatting in front of the all too familiar concrete building. you smile to yourself, thinking of the girl in fond memory, she was really nice. you open the door, beelining to the messy coffee dispenser near the counter. pouring yourself a twenty ounce cup of coffee, you wander to the counter, placing it on the cold surface and giving the cashier a nod and a smile, him doing the same. you didn't expect him to talk to you, though.
"so, that one girl last night, you two hang out?" he said, seeming interested in how last night went.
taken aback a little, you hesitantly responded, "yeah, we did. she seems pretty cool, actually, quite energetic, but pretty down to earth."
the cashier lets out a laugh, "you falling in love with her or somethin' friend? ya' just met her."
that took you by surprise, "no! of course not, i just met her, you know?" you said, almost panicked.
"listen, y/n, you've come in here for years to grab coffee and sweets, i'm just looking out for ya. if she seems cool and treats you right, hold on to her." the cashier suggested, his tone a lot more laid back.
you nod. "i appreciate it. also, it's only been a day. calm down." you laughed.
you gave the cashier a 5, leaving him the change, and grabbed your drink. you walked out of the gas station, taking a sip of your hot coffee, burning your tongue a little and walking back home, ready to start your day, finally. heading home, you stopped at the park on the way there, taking a minute to sit down on the swings to bring back the memories of last night. when you hopped off the swing, you took another stretch, your muscles feeling awfully tense after an uncomfortable night's sleep, and your body hurt from walking.
the walk home was pleasant but awfully drab and dull, the atmosphere around you seeming lifeless without any company, and you didn't have your phone on you to listen to music so it'd be boring. as soon as you entered, though, all the energy from the coffee you once had seemed to be knocked out of you as the reality of you being alone set in. you had to do work on your computer and you were stuck here along, which is never fun, even if you're not always a "people person". you eventually got to your computer, taking off your shoes and trying to relax on a chair too stiff for your back and on a computer that runs too slow. you seemed to grow more and more frustrated at the world around you, the entire environment seeming to be anger and boredom provoking.
after hours and hours of meaningless and tedious work, the sun peeking behind the trees as it fell and the sunlight in your room turning orange, you were once again rejuvenated with energy as you heard a ping noise come form your computer. it took you a moment to realize what program it came from, but as soon as you realized you launched the discord app and saw a small message notification pop up on the top left corner of your monitor. you hovered over the icon to see who it would be from, and it was from someone who's name you didn't entirely realize, and it took you a minute or two to realize who it was even from. valkyrae? i don't think i know a 'valkyrae', odd. val-ky-rae. valkyrae. wait, rae? rae! you opened the message.
valkyrae: hey stranger
y/n: hey! this is rae right
valkyrae: ofc! did you read the discord handle or did you just mindlessly type it in
y/n: guess
valkyrae: valorant?
y/n: that's not a good guess but it'll do :)
valkyrae: shut up and get in game
you open up the 'valorant' application on your computer, seeing the now familiar name valkyrae on your friends list sidebar inviting you to a party. you join up, hearing her soft, energetic voice in your headset, filling you with a rush of emotion, almost like a high. the two of you almost immediately get lost in conversation, forgetting that you're even playing a game together, and when you finally get into a game, you talk and talk without even focusing on the game at all. your team gets mad, sure, as their teammates didn't exactly pay attention to the game and just were chatting their heads off the entire time, but the two of you were just having fun. by the end of the night, it felt like a high like no other, and by the time you were in bed, you were already missing talking to rae.
what you didn't know was rae was already missing you, too.
(a/n enjoy !! also accidentally published this on accident last night whoops, anyways here's some depression into happy stuff, hope you enjoy :o)
