you lay awake in your bed, the sweat from overthinking keeping you conscious. there was a dim light coming in from your window, the half-drawn curtains letting in a glimpse of the beautiful sky that was separated by thousands of miles, but seemingly only a sheet of glass covered by cloth. you turned your head to observe the beautiful specks in the dark sky, the absence of light helping your eyes adjust, a small smile coming across your face as it took your brain off things. you extended your arm toward the window, though not being even close to touching the cold, glass surface, it felt like you were reaching into the stars, miles from earth.

bzzt.

you jolted up, grasping at your phone, pulling yourself out of your space fantasy. your eyes darted across the screen, recoiling slightly at the sudden intrusion of light, but the second you saw the cause of the sudden rush, you didn't regret the small bit of pain.

valkyrae: hey

you struggled to think if you had done something wrong, as you didn't ever see texts like that from her before, not in that tone at least. in the middle of overthinking again, you forced yourself to open the message and respond before you got lost in thought.

y/n: heyo

hey, that works. it sounds nonchalant, and if it's pressing, she'll make it more clear.

valkyrae: can we talk
valkyrae: in person

oh no. did i do something, think, y/n, THINK!

y/n: yeah ofc, park?
valkyrae: ok
valkyrae: see you in ten

ten minutes?! oh jesus, i need to get changed.

you stumbled out of bed and out from under your covers, the wood floor creaking upon the sudden impact. rushing to your dresser, you were already putting on clothes while you were taking them out. you hastily reached your bathroom, turning on the light made you physically flinch from the bright light. you freshened up a bit, but with the time constraints, you can't really do much. reaching the door and cracking it open, you were hit with a blast of cold air, causing you to recoil. you grabbed a jacket on your way out, but you rushed there anyways, so who's kidding, you're not cold.

the park's edge reached your vision, giving you a second to take a break and check the time. you were about two minutes early and gasping for air as running was probably not your best skill or the best method of transportation. you pulled yourself up, though, and continued to the swing set, where you saw a smallish, dark-haired figure slowly swinging. on her swing, from that night.

"...rae?" you muttered, catching her attention, and when she turned, you saw a conflicted expression across her face, only deepening your concerns. "are you.. are we.. okay?"

she smiled, and with a small chuckle. her expression changed from "i don't know how to feel" to "i can't help but laugh at how dumb this is". a small grin started across your face, but when her face returned to the normal expression, so did yours. she looked up at you, her big, brown eyes feeling like they're piercing you.

"i can't tell you if i'm okay, but we are, y/n. we're good." she replied, her once energetic and high-pitched voice seeming so far from the present, the joyful, inspiring tone seeming to fade away and her voice seeming a lot deeper and hoarse. her small laugh from before felt like a sharp pain rocket through my chest, hearing her seem so alone and vulnerable scared you, as though she has opened up to you before and you have connected, this version of her seemed.. different. more rash, less care put into her actions and decisions, like she had to push past some barrier that separated the two of you, but what barrier?

"can i.. tell you something?" her voice seemed a little more rushed, the words seeming more like a test than a question.

"yeah, go for it." you responded carefully, afraid of what she might say or do.

she seemed to fidget, looking anywhere but towards me, never being able to hold or maintain eye contact for more than a second. "i know this might seem.. well, weird, but.. i think i might have.. feelings for you."

you paused, your eyes widening ever so slightly and your mouth hanging very marginally more open than it was, but your brain couldn't comprehend what it just heard. all you could think of was one sentence.

"..y-you're sure?"

rae seemed almost surprised by your odd response, but quickly returned to a serious expression and nodding. "yeah.. yeah. i am."

"..well, uh, me too? wait, i meant that as in towards yo-"

midway through your sentence, rae had stood up and cut you off, and it dawned on you a second in that.. oh my god, i'm kissing her. she's kissing me? then she pulls back, her deep brown eyes setting on yours.

"was that okay?" she mumbled, looking a little shy from her very bold move.

"yeah. very. thank you!"

it hit you later that you said thank you to a kiss, which definitely would catch up with you. the two of you got some bad candy and slushees from the gas station down the strange shortcut from the park, like on the first day you met. it felt like a trip down memory lane, but now, well, you're holding her hand through it. the safety and security of it put a smile on your face, the long-haired brunette standing at your side, keeping you happy and loved. what a good night.

(a/n: back to give you a juicy chapter! i'll keep going after this, i got some plans)
