(note: c/s = coffee shop)

once more, you wake up with some pain in your body, this time your back. you need to pick up a new mattress, this one has been getting worse and worse. you look to the time, seeing it's about 10:45 am, your internal alarm bells ringing loud and clear. no way you slept in dot your alarms, you never do, and if you did, you never sleep in this late. you grab your phone, frantically checking to see if you've gotten any angry texts from your boss only to see, oh wait, it's a saturday. you heavily sigh, the anxiety of missing work dissipating from your conscience and checking your phone a second time to see what happened last night after your gaming session with rae. you giggle, grinning like a maniac at the thought of rae and all you did last night, the smile turning to surprise after you see a message from rae on discord in your feed.

valkyrae: hey again stranger
valkyrae: wanna get coffee?

it was from an hour ago and a small feeling of dread hits you, thinking it's far too late in the day for coffee. despite your worry, you write back.

y/n: sorry just woke up, coffee sounds good! :)

you groan. who texts like that? you sound desperate. though, you set down your phone in your bed, leaving it face up just in case she messages back, but you walk to your kitchen to get some breakfast started. pulling some eggs and a pan out, you haphazardly scramble some eggs, somehow managing not to set the house on fire in the process and making some decent-tasting eggs. with a bit of salt and pepper, any imperfections in the eggs disappear and leave you quite full. you grab a glass of water, trying to get rid of the small headache you've gotten over the course of breakfast, and you nearly choke when you hear a notification on your phone from the other room. hastily finishing your water and stumbling over your messy floor, you make it back to your bedroom, grasping at your phone, to your surprise, seeing a message back from rae.

valkyrae: no problem lol! i'm still down, you wanna meet at c/s in 20?

with a panicked brain, you rapidly write back.

y/n: yeah!! i'll see you there :)

running your hands through your hair and down your face, rushing to the shower to get yourself freshened up, throwing together whatever outfit was clean and looked best, which ultimately came to a hoodie and jeans. you finished up your chaotic process of getting ready, slipping on your shoes and out the door, half-running to make it on time, checking your phone to see any updates, to no avail. the pavement was rougher than you thought, and as you were checking your phone, your foot caught a dislodged piece of sidewalk and you crashed.

your head hurt a little getting up, your eyes adjusting once more to see your knee was scraped up pretty bad, but you really didn't care. you kept hobbling your way down the sidewalk, knee somewhat bleeding out, until the c/s was in your vision, letting you take a second to exhale, checking the time to see you're surprisingly early for being semi-crippled. half-limping to the door, you sigh that rae hasn't shown because of your condition, making your way to the counter to order, getting your coffee, making small talk with the barista about your mangled knee. grabbing your drink, you found a table near a big window, setting yourself up and getting nervous about running out of things to say. as you panicked, the c/s door opened and a small figure stepped in, your nervous thoughts dissipating.

your brain short-circuits when she ran up to you, calling your name out, and you seem to forget how to talk. her outfit is simple, but still impresses you either way, a red and black tie-dye hoodie and shorts, seeing the words '100 thieves' on her hoodie, making you turn your head, you don't much know of who that is, maybe merch? the thought almost immediately escapes you, as the two of you are caught up in conversation, though somewhat one-sided since you're caught up in enjoying her presence.

you buy her coffee and share a pumpkin bread slice, the two of you lost in rambling about one topic or another, which in most friendships could be seen as annoying, but the two of you make it work somehow. you decide to take a chance and ask her something serious.

"hey rae?" you begin, making you nervous.

she looks up from her pumpkin bread, her head tilted, "hm?"

you chuckle a bit, relieving some of the stress. "can i ask you a more, uh, personal question?"

"go for it!" she half-exclaims, not wanting to be too loud.

"so, i've never asked you about what you do for a living. obviously, you don't have to tell me, but i always wondered what someone like you does for a living." you ask, hoping you didn't step over any boundaries.

she perks up, only to pause and think, hesitantly saying, "oh, that's a big one." she stops for a second, looking up at you, and sighing. "i hate to be evasive, but that's quite the question. sorry to be a mood killer."

your face drops, sad that you've ruined the moment. "hey, it's okay. sorry to ask a big question so early, it's our first time actually, well, going out," you immediately feel like that backfires, even if it didn't, "but not like that! not unless you want it to be like that." you bury your face in your hands.

rae busts out laughing. "hey, y/n, buy me a drink first!"

"i already did! i paid for your coffee!"

"gasp! it must be fate, then!"

your smiles and laughter lightens the mood like no other, and you've already come to terms that you might like her a little, but that's okay, it's probably just friendly feelings. you make plans to hang out at her place and go your separate ways, an ear-to-ear smile on your face as you walk home, skipping a little despite your knee hurting. things are good again.

(A/N: SORRY FOR THE HIATUS! I AM BACK! i have so many ideas for  the story and i had a lot going on in my life, hope you like this little chapter of your first date?? maybe??)
