"Jeonghan, I'm heading home," the brunette said in a half-whisper to the only boy not engaged in the obnoxiously loud conversation everyone else was having. Instead, he was merely leaned back listening with a humored smile playing at his lips.
As soon as he heard Joshua's soft voice, he tore his gaze away from the other boys. Even in his drunken state, the American boy's slightest action could completely distract him from his friends, whose antics he had seen a million times. "Already?" he questioned, eyes shining sorrowfully.
"Yeah," Jisoo mumbled, already pushing himself up from the place on the sofa he had been sitting at for hours.
"Wait, I said I'd walk you home," the blonde male said quickly, staggering up to meet the younger's height, swaying a little bit when he finally made it to a standing position.
Joshua had to stop himself from instinctively reaching out to steady the boy in front of him—who was clearly quite drunk. It made his stomach churn at the thought that Jeonghan indulged in some things, but he had to remind himself that not everyone thought the way he did, and as long as he kept himself under control, it was fine.
"Forget it," he insisted, waving his hand a bit as he began backing away from the group.
"Shuaaa~" the blonde whined, pacing forward a few steps to fill the space that Jisoo had created between them. "Please?"
"You're drunk, just stay here."
"But I want to walk you home," the older pouted, but this time, he closed the space between them and hugged Joshua loosely, tucking his head between the American boy's neck and shoulder.
Jisoo stiffened considerably, and every fiber of his being screamed to get Jeonghan off of him. It scared him how adverse he was to the bubbly feeling that rose when the other boy simply touched him. Although the sensation made him feel warm and safe, it made him feel too warm and safe. If he allowed himself to fall into the jaws of sinfulness, he would have a rough time getting back out.
So, he swiftly pushed Jeonghan away and emitted a rushed, "Fine, let's go."
The couple of seconds that he could finally breathe again were simply vain, as the breath was immediately knocked out of him as soon as the blonde boy beamed his angelic smile. Once again, he had to harden his heart and turn away from the sight before his pulse started thumping rapidly and his mind started going haywire.
Finally, Joshua made it to the outdoors. The August air hugged his skin, and although it wasn't as warm as the air in LA, it felt equally as lovely. He almost forgot about the drunk boy close behind him until he spoke up.
"Why are you just standing there?" he giggled, moving beside Joshua and hugging his arm tightly.
Fuck, Jeonghan was a touchy drunk when he wasn't distracted by his friends. Once again, the brunette shrugged him off and made sure the pace of his heart stayed as level as possible. He began walking again—as his moment was ruined—not caring if the older could keep up or not.
"Shua, you're walking too fast," Jeonghan groaned, struggling to match Joshua's strides as the alcohol continued to course through his body.
"You should just stay here. I can walk myself," the younger said curtly instead of slowing down.
"Why are you being so mean?"
The tone of Jeonghan's voice caused him to stop in his tracks. Dammit, he was a touchy, as well as an emotional drunk. The American boy could hear the hurt loud and clear—and even if Jeonghan's emotions were altered by the drinks he had earlier, it still made him feel bad for being so sharp.
"Sorry. Come on."
Although it was against his better judgment, he allowed the blonde boy to catch up to him with his unbalanced steps—and the giggle he received in return almost made him smile a bit himself.
They somehow managed to walk in silence, save for a few chuckles from Jeonghan whenever he would stumble a bit. Any other time, the older would have filled the silence with useless words, so Jisoo was heavily surprised that he could keep his mouth shut for this long. His drunken brain must not have been able to come up with small talk the way his sober one could.
It didn't take too long for them to reach his house, which he stopped abruptly in front of, nearly startling Jeonghan.
"Thanks for walking me. Now go home."
"Fineee. Bye, Shua," Jeonghan grinned, sticking his hand out dramatically, causing Joshua to furrow his eyebrows. "Shake my hand, bitch."
Josh shook his head a bit, because what the fuck, but nonetheless he placed his hand into Jeonghan's. He forced himself to ignore the little flits of electricity he felt shoot through him, and removed his hand nearly as soon as he had given it.
Jeonghan tittered lightly before spinning on his heel as smoothly as he could and beginning the trek back to his house all alone. As Josh watched the slowly receding figure, he was overcome with a wave of guilt. Jeonghan was very drunk, and he was just going to send him home by himself, with no regard for his safety.
As much as he wanted to continue being the cold-hearted asshole he always is, he knew it wasn't the right thing to do. Jeonghan was so kind to him, and the least he could do was repay it a little bit. Hopefully, Jeonghan wouldn't even remember it by the time he woke up tomorrow.
"Jeonghan! Wait a second!" he called before jogging up to the blonde boy, who unsurprisingly hadn't made it far yet.
The older hummed as he turned around to look at Josh with his glittery eyes—which the American boy had to forcibly tear his gaze from.
"Get your phone out and FaceTime me so I'll know if you get home okay," he ordered. He knew he couldn't trust the boy to text him, so he had to make sure he could rest comfortably tonight—no weight of Jeonghan dying playing on his mind.
Jeonghan did as told—almost. "Damn, I can't read," he said with a little laugh, causing Joshua to roll his eyes. That's what you get for drinking, idiot.
"Give it here," he tutted, extending his hand for Jeonghan to sloppily place the phone in.
He scrolled through the blonde's contacts until he found his, but his heart unwillingly started to beat a tad faster as he saw the contact name. Jeonghan had set his name to Shua, followed by a heart emoji. He wouldn't have thought much of it, except there were hardly any other contacts that had emojis after them.
Clearing his throat and forcing himself to forget about it, he FaceTimed himself from the older's phone and picked up the call using his own.
"Okay, go."
"Yes, sir," Jeonghan sniggered, bringing his hand up into a lazy salute. "Bye, Shua."
The brunette didn't answer and ran back to his house, chuckling a bit when he looked down because Jeonghan was humming to himself and holding the phone at an extremely unflattering angle.
Jeonghan really was one of a kind, even if nearly everything he did made Joshua want to scream and stay as far away from him as possible.
Because even if those avoidant feelings were present, so were the ones that made him never want there to be a time where he and the blonde weren't friends.
