Chapter 11- Catherine

Life was weird now and things were different.  I wasn’t sure if I regretted going out with Turner or if I was enjoying the newfound intention.  Thinking back on the not-date I had with Turner, all I could remember was agreeing to go so that he would stop bothering me, but as the past two weeks went on, it was clear that he wasn’t going anywhere.  Every morning, he came and picked me and Jeff up and took us to school.  As a result of this happening for the first time on the Monday following our outing, I was stuck at school until both he and Jeff were done with practice before Turner drove the two of us to my house.  For the first week Turner would just drop us off, but then for everyday of this past week, Turner has been hanging out with us at my house.

I didn’t know what to do.  The first time he got out of the car, I asked him what he was doing and Jeff said that they had to go over a few plays for football and his simple retort for not going to Turner’s was that he didn’t want Turner to have to drive him back after.  This happened again the second day and then by the third day, with no excuse on their plate, it was clear that Turner wasn’t going to give up.  At first I didn’t understand why Jeff was helping Turner when I knew that Jeff was just as disgusted with Turner as I was, but then I realized that Jeff was just another Master.  The only redeeming quality he had was that he was my friend and I knew he would never betray me.  And it was because Jeff was my friend that I lightened up on Turner because if Jeff could stand to hang out with Turner the past few weeks, then Turner must be worth it.

At first I was annoyed that Turner wouldn’t leave me alone, but it turned out his incessant need to be near me helped me get to know him even more.  And much to Brennan and Jennifer’s dismay, Turner began eating lunch with us once in a while.  I began to doubt my preconceptions of Turner more and more with each passing day.  Turner was attempting to befriend Brennan to get closer to me and each day he chipped away at his wall and looking at the way they were laughing and joking around during lunch at the moment, I knew I was a goner.  Turner had completely infused himself in my life and I was beginning to doubt that I could resist him any longer.  Brennan loved talking about literature and music with Turner and Jennifer and Turner had already cemented a friendship.  Turner wasn’t stuck on some pedestal anymore or different from the rest of the world.  He knew how to make friends outside of The Masters and he knew how to win people over.  I must have been the hardest person for him to even begin to win over and he didn’t know that he’d begun to win me over yet.  I didn’t want to lose my pride just yet.  There had to be more to Turner than he was letting on and I wasn’t going to turn my heart lose until I knew what he was hiding.  There was no way he was the person he was letting on to be.

“Cat, listen to this,” Brennan said excitedly, offering his earphone to me over the table.  “Turner found this awesome band.  They are so epic.”

“Um… Okay…” I took the earphone from him as Turner and Brennan watched expectantly, waiting for my reaction to this ‘epic’ band.  As soon as the earphone was less than an inch away from my ear, I could hear a guitar solo going on and I waited a few seconds to hear song lyrics, but a singer never began wailing as they often did in the songs Brennan claimed to be epic.  “There’s no one singing.”

“Of course not!  This band just plays a bunch of instruments and it’s so awesome!” Brennan exclaimed.  “I can’t wait to get more of their stuff.”

“I can just send you the stuff I have,” Turner volunteered as he continued to bob his head to the song I just could not get into.  “So Cat, what do you think?”
