Chapter 1- Catherine

I could not believe I was here. It was completely unnecessary to be at Turner Platt's house for his apprentice announcement party. There were so many other things I could be doing right now it was ridiculous.  It was crazy how many people were actually here waiting to hear who Turner and his friends had picked to be their apprentices for the year.

"Jeff!" I yelled over the loud music. "I'll be right back"

"Where are you going?" my best friend yelled back, bobbing his head to the music.

"Restroom, watch my drink will you?" I asked him, shoving my drink into his hand. “I don't want anyone to roofie me."

"Sure thing. I'll stay here so you can find me after."

I shouted thanks and wove my way through the mass of people in search of the bathroom in the enormous house.

The infamous Turner Platt was the son on the mayor of the small town of Carmendale and the three surrounding small towns. The Platt family was one of the six sons from founding families of our small town, Carmendale.  Turner Platt, Parker Tamber, Jackson Mears, Bennett Davies, Derrick Evans, and Aaron Edwards were the six sons of the founding families in high school right now and were all seniors. Turner was the "leader" and the others- Parker, Jackson, Aaron, Bennett, and Derrick were the second in command.  They were usually together, but paired off occasionally: Parker and Aaron were both played on the school’s basketball team, Jackson and Bennett, who was an undercover artist, were on the school’s baseball team together, and Derrick joined Turner, who played every sport known to man, on the school’s football team.  They were the all-American guys, good-looking jocks.

We all lived in the same town from the day we were born and only a few have ever left. The eldest sons started the group, The Masters, and since then they have been at the top of the high school caste system.  I didn't know why they were called The Masters and it was outrageous.

Every year during the second week of school, the current leader would throw a party to announce the "lucky" sophomores who were picked to enter their group. The Masters were made up of the best looking guys at our school, however, other than the six sons of the founding families, the others couldn’t compare.  Everyone knew how things worked at the high school but no one cared enough to try and make things less high school cliché.

My best friend Jeff dragged me to the party tonight and claimed that it would be just as fun as staying at one of our houses and watching television or a movie. I tried to make my mom ground me or tell Jeff that I couldn't go, but even she thought it would be nice if I went to the party with Jeff.  Jeff and I had known each other pretty much since I was born. Our parents have been best friends since their teenage years and pushed us together since I was brought home from the hospital and placed in the bassinet with him to sleep. We grew up together and spent almost every second of our lives together.  Everyone thought we were together from the moment boys no longer had cooties and girls were no longer gross, but we were never together and never would be. At twelve years old, we made it clear to each other that we would never date so that we would never ruin our friendship.
