The New Mission

Meilin took a deep breath, taking in the many scents of the great pine forest. She could hear the rushing sound of a near by river and the screech of a hawk diving after its prey. To her, this was a unfamiliar land, full of unknown mystery's and secrets that pleaded her to go deeper.

A cool breeze whistled through the pines, ruffling her hair. She trudged forward and into the shadows that grabbed at her eagerly. Suddenly a flash of scales appeared in front of the girl, teeth snapped and blood flew. A hiss and she lay still on the ground.

A loud shriek, the world darkened, and...

Meilin woke with a gasp. Jhi stood beside the bed, a look of concern on the panda's face. The girl lay up, breathing heavily, and stroked the animal's fur. "It's fine, only a dream." She said. It was still dark outside the window, a large moon glared into the room. It's around five or six in the morning. She thought. Jhi flashed a look at the door and the handle turned with a jerk. Rollan ran in quickly, Essix following in a blurr. "What happened, we heard screaming next door?" He asked briskly. "Are you okay?" She blinked, slowly coming to her senses. "I had a nightmare, it was nothing, don't worry!" Meilin snapped.

Rollan had a wounded look come across his face. I hurt his feelings. She thought sadly.

"Sorry, I didn't mean-"  She started but was cut of when he flashed a strong smile.

"It's okay." The boy remarked although she could tell he was lying. "Get cleaned up and come to the Dinning hall in 20 minutes, Olvan and Lenori have something they want to tell us, Conor, and Abeke."

"Um... Sure." She told him. Rollan took on last look back as he padded out the door, his spirit animal perched on his shoulder.

Jhi grumbled and shifted her black and white fur. "What?" Meilin remarked looking the bear in her silver eyes. "Should I have told him?" The panda rolled to her feet and strolled away from the Greencloak.

After a few minutes Meilin was dressed in her blue patterned tunic, white pants, and a dull russet sash tied to her side. Holding out her hand, a flash of light blazed and a panda tattoo appeared on the back of her hand. Trekking out of the room the girl made her way to the Dinning hall.

The halls the were quiet that morning with only a couple Greencloaks roaming with their spirit animals trailing. A woman stopped to greet the young girl, her white spotted deer nudging her arm happily.

"How are you this day Meilin?" She asked.

Meilin answered with a quick statement, "I'm doing well, how are you and Joila?"

The woman nodded. "Fine, we are being assigned to Eura in another month to help rebuild a town."

"That's good, I know that you and your deer don't like being trapped indoors."

"Yes, you are right."

"Well, I have to meet the others in the dinning hall, so I will have to go now."

"Have a nice day."

"You too."

Meilin continued through the long, candle-lit halls. Her hair swished behind her like it was dancing. Coming though the entrance she was hit with a strong whiff of fresh glazed buns. At the table Rollan was speaking to Abeke, his face smudged with a cheerful grin. Spinning, the boy's eyes lit up. "You made it!" He said loudly. She pulled out a chair and sat beside him, taking a smooth green apple that lay in a basket on the table.  "Yes, I would never miss breakfast." She spoke and took a large bite of the fruit. Rollan nodded excitingly and continued his conversation with Abeke. "You once said you would never-" He was cut off when Olvan, Lenori, and Conor entered the room, their green cloaks swirling like on huge cape.
