~part one of chapter 9~

FALLING DANGERS

Terror slammed into Rollan like an icy breeze. Knives seemed to fly through the dark, cutting sharply into Rollan's face and the fresh wound made from the Raptor. I'm falling, He thought quickly.

Blinking his eyes harshly, the boy drifted his hand out into the unknown, hoping to find some place to firmly grip. But instead of feeling a smooth surface, a shearing pain cut across his fingers, sending an intense pain up his arm. The walls were made of some sort of stone, edged enough to slash at his flesh when he toughed it gingerly. Rollan drew his hand back swiftly and felt the torn and bloody skin that had been ripped up in an instant.

Panic soon filled his lungs and he cried out in blinding pain and terror, the sounds echoing around him as a storm would. I'm going to die!Suddenly a dim light appeared below him, casting shadows along the rigid rock that surrounded him. The tunnel started to get slightly larger. Then in a flash Rollan fell into a huge cavern, soft light flooding his vision.

"Ahhh!" He yelled loudly.

Once his eyes adjusted, the boy looked down and saw that the light was coming from a moss that lined the walls. It glowed very faintly, but enough to light the wide hollow and show what was contained in its walls. For a few moments he was shocked at the beauty of the tavern, but the wonderful sight was soon ruined when he saw the ground.

"Ahhh!" He shouted once more in fright.

It was lined with tall pointed spikes, angled to impale any unlucky creature who had fallen. The silagmights lingered with the remains of animals and boney skeletones from over a dozen misfortunate humans.

"Essix!" He called out without thinking. Placing his hand over his heart, the boy closed his eyes and pictured the bird, her amber feathers flowing in the wind. Help me! Do anything! His thoughts screamed. Gasping as a wave of dizziness overcame him, he was pulled into a cold and sudden darkness. But it was not any darkness like he had witnessed before from nighttime or sleeping. An observer lay in the shadows that watched him, taking in every breath he took, weighing the very existence of life.

"Who are you?" Rollan asked, stepping forwards. The Greencloak's legs trembled as a stale voice answered from the dull void, hints of mystery and unease surrounding him.

"I have been called many things." It said. "But you will soon know my true name that has not been spoken since the people of Kaein were banished from Erdas."

Rollan peered around, trying to make out any humanly figures, but he failed to see who was speaking. "Since the people of Kaein were banished from Erdas?" He uttered. "Do you mean to tell me those locals who tried to kill me for some trial were originally from Erdas?!"Silence filled the gloom of the unending emptiness.

"Are you the Darkness?" He questioned. "Answer me and show yourself!"

A misty figure came forwards, pale gray hands reaching out and reminding him of ghosts that are told in stories to scare children. The air also seemed to grow cooler as the stranger drifted in front of Rollan, as if the only warmth was scared and was running away.

The man was tall, thin and wiry, his dark hair thick, fore he had died young. A red and gold toga covered his skinny frame which was covered in burn wounds that still blazed of blue fire. Though his unrevealed face was still blurred, no emotion showing through the veil.A flaming hand fell over Rollan's shoulder and he froze with uncertainty, taking in the man. "Who are you and what do you want?" He managed to choke over the pain that ignited his arm as fire hit flesh.
