The Kar

Rollan lay in a large tent, its walls made of thick animal hides and fur. The walls were painted with red and gold designs that danced around the room like blood and honey. A sweet smell floated in the air and he saw shelves of green herbs and flowers sorted on shelves.

What happened? What is this place? His mind whimpered.

The boy shifted on the small bed he lay upon. It was lined with bristled pelts that made his side burn with an agonizing pain. The boy let out a groan of pain as it ignited and sent chills down his spine. Glancing down he saw his clothing was soaked with blood and he remembered the wound that was left by that lizard.

He leaned up slightly, resting on his elbows. "Where am I?" He breathed out loud.

"How are you feeling?" Asked a feminine voice. Rollan spotted a woman near the door, her long brown hair braided down her back and white freckles splashed over her face sun burnt face. A flowing russet dress swayed down her plump body as she moved to get closer to the boy. She stared at Rollan for a moment before speaking, "You have been asleep for a few hours."

"What happened? Why am I here?" Rollan asked.

"A scouting group found you on the shore with two others. By the looks of it, you had been shipwrecked and injured. Fortunately, I was able to tend to the wounds before anything became fatal."

"You said only two others?" Rollan caught his breath, not wanting to think any further. "Where is the rest of the team?"

"Most likely claimed by the sea, or swept to another part of the island. We have parties out right now, looking by the shores and other visible places. But I wouldn't be surprised if they perished, this place is known to take what it wants."

Rollan closed his eyes as they began to burn. Holding back tears wasn't easy, but he couldn't break down yet.

"Who are the pair? Was one a girl?"

"Yes, said her name was Meilin. The other was a young man with dull red hair. Both are currently resting in a different hut."

The boy exhaled a sob of relief; part of his worry drained away knowing she was safe.

"Does she mean something to you?"

"Very much."

All of a sudden Rollan forcefully gripped his side, a sharp sting shot through him. The woman calmly walked over to the shelves, picked up a fern-like herb, crushed it under a stone and added water, making a paste. She then dressed it over his wound and said, "You were attacked by one of Kaein's many dangers, the Raptor. Its teeth contain a bacteria that can become infected, but I cleaned it out and now you should be fine. All that's left is making sure you don't pass out from the pain."

After a moment of rubbing on the ointment, his wound stopped burning, and he was able to gingerly swing his legs off the bed and sit up. Rollan sighed with relief and replied,  "What's your name?"

"Rey, I'm the healer for the Kar." She said.

"Kar?" He asked.

"Yes, this is what my people are called. We live in these lands and have survived for generations. Hadden is the current leader and has been in charge since his father died twenty years ago." She looked to the floor, a sadness overcoming her gaze. Something about that name made her crawl into the darkest corners of her mind.

Rollan saw regret in her gaze, full of a painful memory that she keep to herself. He felt the room shift with unease. Rey sighed and looked up. "So what do they call you?" She said chasing out the bad mood that clung to the air.
