Dally and I walk home as it starts to get darker. "See, look how pretty the sunset is Dal." I say pointing to the sky. He looks up, smoking his cigar.

"That's very pretty" he looks at me for a split second. "Did you even look?" I laugh at him, playing with my fingers again. "Yeah, did you not see me look at the sky?"

We keep walking as I continue to admire the beautiful sunset, filled with so many colors, it started with pink, faded to a light blue and some yellow.

I stop walking standing there realizing something quickly, we had been sitting at that bridge for far too long.

Darry and Soda were definitely home from work by now. My eyes widen, I'm going to be in so much trouble I think to myself.

"Elaine?" Dallas turns to me seeing me standing there. I look up at him playing with my fingers yet again.

"Darry and Soda they're home." I say in a nervous tone. He looks at me with a "What are we doing standing here" look.

"Elaine, what are we standing here for? let's get going!" he shouts. I nod very fast, scrambling to walk as fast as I can. We walk shortly arriving at my house.

I look up at Dal giving him a very nervous look. He gives me a nod, as we walk to the door together.

Dal follows right behind me, as I open the door with some hesitation as walking through it, knowing full well what's about to go down.

I enter the house seeing Darry angrily getting up from his chair where he was reading his newspaper.

"Where the hell have you been?!" I look to Soda for any sort of help, but he gave me a look saying he agreed with Darry. He was supposed to be backing me up, be my partner, but I guess not.

I sigh, I've been so stressed out lately. "I just went to go get ice cream with Dal, it's no big deal" I shrug.

Darry looks more angry with my answer. I can't believe him. I just want to have fun. Can't he stop being so overprotective for once? I don't need to be babysat all the time.

"Dally, I'm going to need you to leave." Darry points to the door angrily. Dal gives me a worried look as he backs out the door heading home. I roll my eyes at Darry. He just had to ruin every little thing didn't he.

"Elaine, that's no big deal?! I told you not to leave the house and you disobeyed my one rule!" he shouts at me. He acts like such a Dad, I don't like this.

I could feel tears beginning to brim my eyes, threatening to fall. I don't want to be weak, I felt weak crying. I don't like it when others raise their voice at me.

"I'm sorry, it's just ice cream it won't happen again." I wipe my eyes quickly.

Darry softens his look, coming over to hug me. "Oh, Laney I didn't mean to raise my voice at you. I just don't want you getting hurt, ever."

I laugh looking up at him. "How would I get hurt by getting ice cream with Dallas?"

He shakes his head resting his chin on my head. "I don't know what I was thinking putting Dal in charge of ya."

I laugh pulling away from him. "We just got ice cream that's all. He's a good guy Darry."

I sit next to Soda on the couch laying my head in his lap. He starts to play with my hair, instantly relaxing me.

"He's trouble that's what he is." Darry says. I shake my head, rolling my eyes.

"Go to bed you two." He points to Soda and I. I laugh and start poking Soda on his cheek.
