A Day in the Life

It was approximately eight in the morning when Mikey Way climbed out of his car. He strode towards the institute doors, whistling a tune under his breath. The sun shone and birds chirped around him. It was a stereotypically great day.

He walked through the front doors and approached the receptionist desk. The tired looking lady sat behind the desk, her shadowed eyes closed. Mikey paused in his steps slightly to study the woman.

She had to be in her late fifties, with almost completely grey hair. She had a namebadge reading 'Kathy'. Kathy's face looked kind but her eyes have away the sleepless nights. In Mikey's opinion, she looked exhausted.

He slowly walked to the desk and quietly cleared his throat. When Kathy didn't stir, he called her name gently. She stirred and her eyes flew open. "Oh my god! I'm sorry, sir. I didn't-"

"It's ok, Kathy. You look tired," Mikey said quietly. "I don't blame you for falling asleep, you look that exhausted."

Kathy looked at Mikey and gently smiled. "Life gets tough when you grow up, kid. If it were up to me, I'd still be your young age." She smoothed her hair and folded her hands. "What can I do for you, son?"

Mikey gave her his most charming smile and leaned onto the counter. "Can I see Gerard Way?" he asked.

Kathy glanced at the clock and then at a sign on the wall. "Honey, you're about four hours early for visiting hours," Kathy explained kindly. "So not right now, no."

Mikey flushed with embarrassment. "Oh, I'm sorry. I-I didn't see the sign...."

Kathy waved a hand. "Ah, it's alright, kid. Are you Mr. Way's brother?"

"Yes I am. How did you know?" Mikey asked.

Kathy smiled to herself. "You look like him, somehow. Not exactly, but he's in there somewhere," Mikey smiled proudly. "And you came in the other day." Kathy added with a laugh.

Mikey smacked his forehead. "Oh!"

Kathy shook her head and brought the computer monitor to life. "Well, see you in four hours, honey." she said, waving.

Mikey waved back and walked back out the door. As he stepped outside, he noticed the coffee shop down the road. He strolled down to the little cafe and wandered inside.

As he approached the counter, he noticed a girl sitting in a dark corner. Her main feature was her hair, dyed purple. Her eyes flickered over to him and he offered a smile. She looked across for a moment before quickly immersing herself in her drink. Mikey shrugged, confused, and continued to the counter.

The lady took his order and winked at him a few times. Mikey would admit, with her long brown hair and wide smile, she was pretty but he was distracted at the time. His eyes kept wandering to the lonely girl in the corner.

Once he had his order, he walked over and smiled slightly. "May I sit?" he asked.

The girl jumped, her drink slopping over the sides slightly. Her eyes wandered from the coffee up to his face and she gasped. "I-I ....I'm sorry!" she said, starting to panic.

Mikey quickly sat down and took her hand. "Hey, I'm not here to arrest you or anything! Calm down, please?" he soothed, glancing around. A few people looked at them weirdly but soon went back to their routines.

The girl calmed down slightly and looked closely at Mikey's face. "You are Gerard's brother, right?" she asked softly, eyes guarded.

A wave of déjà vu hit Mikey and he frowned. "How did you know that?" he asked slowly.

The girl stiffened and stood up, her coffee forgotten. "I've got to go." she said abruptly, backing away.

Mikey stood and raised a hand. "Wait! What's your name?" he called after her, not caring about the staring customers.

The girl paused slightly and turned her head. "Nadia..." she said quietly before practically sprinting from the small shop.

Four hours of pondering over countless coffees passed and Mikey stood. He tossed his empty cup into the bin and walked back down the road to the institute.

Pushing the doors open, he stepped up to the desk. Kathy still sat in her chair, smiling up at him. "Hello dear. Back for Gerard?" she said kindly.

Mikey nodded and Kathy pointed to a sign in sheet. Mikey filled out the details and Kathy waved him through the double doors to the right. With a click, the doors opened and Mikey wandered through.

He made his way down the corridor, to the lounge area. He'd learnt from Frank that Gerard liked to hang out there and sketch. Mikey was glad that Gerard still love art. He had been worried he'd lose interest, but according to Frank it was still there.

As he walked through the white halls, Mikey passed two nurses as they talked quickly. He caught a sentence and those words made him stop dead.

He turned and faced the nurses. "Um, did you just say Nadia? Purple hair?" he asked slowly.

The left nurse stopped and looked him up and down. "Have you seen her around, sir? It's of upmost importance that we find her." the man said seriously.

"What? Why?" Mikey asked, dreadfully curious.

The right nurse stepped forward. "Sir, she's escaped from the institute she was moved to. Nadia is quite unstable and needs to be found. Immediately."

Mikey blinked a few times and shook himself. "Um, yeah. I saw her a few hours ago at the coffee shop down the road..."
