The creator.
The progenitor spirit.
The one you affectionately refer to as your mother.
They are the one responsible for crafting through natural mana, the spirits that you may or may not have encountered before. The mass grandly motioned, receiving a blank look from the young lady. It grunted, slouching over. If an indistinguishable mass of darkness with red eyes that crawled all over it, could possibly seem annoyed, this mass surely was. It let out what could be seen as a sigh, knowing that as a child, Sirius's knowledge was limited.
I am known as Erebus, the spirit of darkness. In the shapeless realm of dream, Sirius watched as Erebus shape into a figure that resembled the magic bat beast she first met them with.
Well, it makes sense now. Sirius thought. It made her wildly uncomfortable to be alone with the being, as she hated the dark.
Your mother gifted you with light magic because in a way, they also doubled as the spirit of light and creation. They rein as our leader and their power protects all spirits and the realm that we live in.
The problem is, many of the spirits don't listen. As our creator, they have tried their best to make our home world suitable for everyone, even allowing for spirits to cross over to this world of humans. This is important as the mana in this world is very different from home.
Making pacts with humans makes us stronger. Gives everyone a big head if you ask me. Erebus threw up its arms. Humans capability to use mana attracts spirits with the same attribute, but the weak ones can't normally pass the barrier between worlds. Which would be fine...
"If?" Sirius tilted her head to the side as the mass shrunk down and took almost a human shape. Erebus huffed and the red eyes stared at Sirius half lidded.
If they weren't complete idiots and ignore safety nets the creator made! They found a way to sneak into this world. It showed them that most humans didn't even believe in them. If you ask me, some of the spirits have become so restless. Especially when they compare themselves to the four great spirits of fire, wind, earth, and water. The creator gave them providence over those elements, thus even spirits with the same element, could never become as strong as them. Erebus was greatly annoyed even mentioning the four elementals.
Lesser spirits cannot be seen by humans. No human, no contract, no power, and by not having power, they are unable to go home. This also puts them in danger of losing all their magic and the spirit will eventually cease to exist. So child, it's up to you to gain the tokens of these spirits. These, much like the one I gave your friend, create a gate through your grimoire back to the spirit world and allowing us to go home.
There was a long pause of silence as Sirius processed what Erebus said. It was troubling to know that if a spirit stays in the human world, that they would die. This made her wonder if a few of the creatures she's seen, where spirits stuck in that situation.
"But how can I do this?" Sirius questioned. All she had ever known, was that her mama was her mama. Not a creator, not an all powerful spirit. Just her mother, who loved her.The red eyes squinted in annoyance.
Well... if I had to guess. It is because you're half human.
...
...Sirius blinked wildly at the dark creature as it yawned out of one of its many mouths.
"Half human?"
Yes human. Meaning, you can stay in this world without a contract and could easily return home. The creator must think that you can help lesser spirits... I'm not really sure what they want, I've never met the creator. Light and all.
Sirius stared at her feet before lifting her hands to observe them.
Humans had these, but mama had them too.
She never really knew what she was. Her mother never said anything about the difference between spirits and humans, only that she hoped Sirius could make friends.
But in the end, Sirius just wanted to make her mama happy and maybe she could make more friends with spirits.
"If mama wanted me to help other spirits, why did you hurt me?" Sirius asked as her big eyes filled with tears. Her pout only made Erebus sighed.
That, is what happens when a spirit doesnt return the spirit world after such a long time, right before they decay away. Spirits may lose control in their final hours in the hope of finally being seen. I attached myself to an statue that was left in that cave after coming here. I too, thought I was good enough to contract with a human. Unfortunately those who use dark magic are few and far in between. I was consumed with the need to destroy light after my years of seclusion. Erebus huffed as it shrunk to about the height of a small dog.
I'm... sorry. It struggled to say before expanding its size again. There! I said it! Now I'll be taking my leave! Enjoy your time among the humans... damn... smelly ...grr..
Erebus vanished from the dream realm and Sirius was left alone. Her mother had given her a task, a big task.
And an even bigger truth finally hit her.
She wasn't the same as her friends.
She wasn't the same as other spirits.
Curling into a ball, she squeezed her eyes shut as she cried.
She was truly and utterly, alone.
