                        April 1914

"You fuckin' what Thomas?!" She almost screamed at him from across the betting shop den.

He sighed, shook his head and repeated himself.

"I said we signed up for the war." He spoke calmly, full knowledge that at any moment she could go off like a ticking time bomb. His ocean blue eyes met her dark brown orbs and it was like a tornado met a hurricane, has been like that since they met as children.

"Genevieve it won't get any better the louder you scream, love" Polly spoke, grabbing her hand in attempts to calm her down.  Genevieve ripped her hand out of Polly's and sighed.

"Thomas... when exactly did you think this was a good idea?" She said, pinching the bridge of her nose.

"Now." He spoke. His calm demeanor never faltered, never broke. Not since he met her.

"But wha' about your family? Huh? Wha' about Finn? Or Ada? For fucks sake wha' about me?" Her eyes once again meeting his, almost to tears once again.

"Genevieve I wouldn't have signed up if it wasn't for family and you. "

"None of us would have" John jumping in, much to everyone's displeasure. They were supposed to ease it in starting with Thomas seeing as Genevieve was showing she would take it the worst.

Polly's head shot up, and fire brewed in her eyes.

"Excuse the fuck out of me? What did I just hear? ALL of you's signed up?" Polly seethed. Polly Gray was not someone you wanted to piss off, and all of small heath knew that.

"Yeah Aunt Pol, we all are goin' off" Arthur spoke up, holding his head high.

"I've about 'ade enough of this" Genevieve said, passing everybody by but especially made sure to pass by Thomas.

And pass by she did. Her long locks of blonde whipping by, filling his nostrils of honey and vanilla and bringing him back down to earth.

She was his weakness, the only thing living or breathing to bring him to his knees.

As she walked out to the streets of Small Heath she sighed. As a rare day in England, the sun was shining. For Genevieve it always came as a clear indicator that something relatively bad would happen.

Deciding to just walk to the cut she pulled her hair into a tight bun and rolled her sleeves up. The feeling of frustration first came and then worry.
What would that mean for them? For their families? What about the buisness that the Shelby men and Polly built? All of these questions ran through her mind at once and she felt sick. The thought of losing any of whom she considered family, or even Thomas made her sick to her stomach.

And sick she was. She puked that morning's breakfast of tea and eggs up, faintly wiping her mouth and just sitting on the grass with her feet in the water.

"Mind if I join?" She heard behind her. Looking back she knew it was Thomas, and just patted the ground next to her.

"Well you do own Small Heath, so I'd say jus' about so." She spoke softly, the gypsy in her shining through.

"Genevieve, I'm sorry..." he started and she just waved her hand in dismissal and just shook her head.

"Thomas, I don't want to hear it. I'm gon' wake up and it will all be a bloody dream. That's it, that's all."

"Will you please do me the pleasure of shutting the fuck up for a minute and letting me speak?" He asked, peering at her. His jaw flexed and shifted, a clear sign that he was NOT to be fucked with.

"Go on." She spoke.

"I only have about a month, maybe a couple of weeks." He said, his eyes leaving hers and just staring ahead confidently. If there was anything Thomas knew he had to do consistently was hold his head high.

"Only a couple of weeks, that's fuckin' rich right there." She pointed at him, getting pissed again.

"Genevieve.." he said in a tone that wore a warning, but she continued on enough anyways.

"Genevieeeeevvveee." She mocked, her eyes stare straight to his jaw, then his eyes.

"Don't 'Genevieve', me Thomas. You know exactly why I'm being like this. Every single time we get a chance to be us in our own company, you piss off and do something or blame it on work or blame it on the buisness or what ever. We used to laugh, Tommy."

The rare use of his nickname from her made him perk up. It was rare form for her to use his nickname simply because she liked his full name more.

"You knew this was going to happen. " is all he simply said.

She decided to not argue any longer, just entwining their hands and trying to enjoy their moment before it to was lost.
