axel sat out in the waiting room, mask pulled over his face with his eyes closed. he hadn't left the hospital since yesterday afternoon and rae wouldn't let him in max's room. he could understand if max had told her what happened, but what he struggled to tell her was that it wasn't true. he wasn't cheating on max with her own sister. he'd done some fucked up things in his life before, but nothing like that. he didn't have the willpower to do such a thing.
axel had barely slept last night, which he didn't beat himself up over. usually he had max by his side or on the phone with him. plus, he was usually in a bed and not some hospital chair that was too short for his own good.
where mayson was, axel didn't know nor care. as far as he was concerned, she was dead. that first night they were together in the hotel and axel had caught sight of those burns he felt a searing hatred flare in the back of his mind for her family. his father was a drunk, sure, but he wasn't abusive. at least, not physically.
as he sat here with nothing better to do than to listen to his own thoughts, axel realized just how fucked up the pair were. he also realized how much they needed each other and how fragile the girl he loved was.
wait. loved? did he just... did he just think 'loved'?
corpse rubbed a hand along his face and groaned. he so didn't need this right now.
"mr. husband?"
his eyes opened as he looked at the doctor who'd just entered the room. he stood up.
"you've been requested."
axel nodded and held back any questions for fear of using his voice in public areas. the door opened and rae sat there next to max's bed. unfortunately she wasn't awake, but he still pulled up a chair across the bed from rae after the doctor closed the door.
"you have explaining to do, mr.," rae said, glaring daggers into him as she took off her mask.
axel opted to keep his on as he unloaded the story to her. his throat was sore from lack of use and his acting up gerd, but he told her everything he felt comfortable with- more like that he felt max would be comfortable with. when he was done, she was staring down at max's sleeping form. he hoped she was sleeping.
"i'm sorry i was such a dick about it. i just get protective when it comes to her."
axel shook his head. "it's alright. so do i. how bad is she?"
"not as bad as the first time, thankfully. she did fuck up her knee even more, though. the doctor's not sure if he could fix it at this point. walking in general could be difficult for her."
axel sucked in a breath. she's going to be devastated. he sat there for a few minutes, mulling over her body and what has happened over the past few weeks. in a matter of days she had his life flipped over onto its head, but the more he thought about it the more he didn't care. axel loved her smile and the tingle she made him feel in his chest. she was gorgeous and funny and so fucking courageous.
finally, he spoke. "whatever surgery she needs... i'll help pay for it. hell, i'll pay for all of it if i have to. she needs the money more than i do."
"hold up, cowboy," rae said. "look, i get that you like her, but you don't have to keep playing hero. that surgery is going to be so fucking expensive, and that's if they can even do it."
axel shrugged. "it'll be alright. she's helped me more than you can realize. it's time i pay her back."
rae smiled. "god, you're fucking nuts."
he smiled too, remembering their first among us game they played. "yeah, maybe i am."
