rae had left late last night, which left axel all alone with max the next morning. the doctors allowed him to stay, so he slept very uncomfortably on the couch. well, he'd barely call it sleeping.

axel had given rae the key to his apartment so she could grab zeus and take him home to make sure that he wasn't underfed. the dog was getting big. after the doctor inspected her knee a little bit on an x-ray, he said the surgery was possible and he could get it done with minimal set backs. axel smiled, relieved.

later on that day max had woken up for a few minutes, mumbling a few words to axel before she fell back asleep. they were hard to hear, but he was able to make out the small 'i forgive you' and 'i love you.'

"i love you too, max."

he lowered his mask and kissed her forehead. max grumbled in her sleep and blindly reached out for his hand that rested on her thigh. he looked down at the girl he now shamelessly loved. fuck, he was in so deep.

"can you hold me?" she suddenly mumbled, an eye peeking open.

"what?"

"can you hold me? i'm cold."

axel kicked off his shoes and situated himself under the thin covers and let her rest on his chest. her left hand was the injured one, the bones in it shattered. thankfully that was the only thing she'd broken.

"i have good news and bad news," axel said.

"bad first."

"it's about your knee."

he felt her stiffen. "what about it?"

"they said it might be harder for you to walk. the way you landed... it didn't exactly help your problem."

"and the good news?"

"they can still fix it with surgery. it's about twenty grand."

max sighed. "i don't have that money."

"no, but we do."

"'we'?" max sat up a little bit and looked at him, wincing as she twisted her knee a little bit.
