Camila POV
first letter I wrote was addressed to a boy in my first grade class. His name was Nate Cloud, and even at the age of six, my passion for him (and his light blue jumpsuit) was overwhelming.
My words were written in light green crayons with a simple: "Do you like me? Make a yes or no circle."
Not that idiot circulated.
The second letter I wrote was to a girl in my library class. Her name was Ashley Donovan and I desperately wanted to be her best friend. I wrote three full lines telling her everything we had in common - everything that would make us the perfect pair of friends. (Sandals smelling of pink jelly, a Barbie dream home and a collection of bright Barbie beanies). My words were written on notebook paper, with a final question that read: "Can you be my best friend? Make a circle in yes or yes."
She didn't circle either.
She created her own option: NO.
I went through first and second grade with a broken heart and zero friends, so I kept the rest of my letters to myself.
Until I met the girl who lived on the street I moved to, the girl who became my first best friend.
For a total of three seconds.
She was the worst person I've ever met in my life, and the moment she quoted some nonsense about "keeping your friends close and your closest enemies", all while throwing me off my bike and kicking me, I was convinced that the word "friend" would never be part of my vocabulary.
I would never have someone who loved letters as much as I did.
That is, until she became the first person in my life to write me back.
Not just once.
Not just twice.
But always.
Even if we hated ourselves to the soul, and never managed to get along for more than twenty minutes together, we always wrote back...
