The Kingdom falls into disarray at the sudden announcement of the wedding.
Ji Eun walks the streets of the main square ignoring the hushed whispers and fearful gazes.
Finally, everything was working in her favor, she smiles to herself.
It came as a shock when Jungkook told her he had spotted her upon her first day in the village. Never the less it was the perfect coincidence.
She had known all along he'd been watching her.
From the days he would come to her village at night and spy upon her cottage. He did it for months and finally, he had approached her.
Truth be told she had visited the Kingdom of Narcisse a year earlier, in search of her cousin who had gone missing years prior.
Kwon Mina.
After her own parent's death, her aunt took her in and raised her alongside her daughter, Mina. Mina had been 8 at the time whilst she was merely 5 years old. They were practically sisters how close they were. They knew everything about each other. When Mina had turned 18 she left home, opting to take up mentorship under a famed book writer she admired. The village she ended up in was none other than Narcisse. Mina would often write to her to keep her and her mother updated.
In one particular letter, she had mentioned meeting royalty. Ji Eun didn't pay much mind until she received a letter from Mina that excitedly talked about a man she had fallen in love with. His name was Jungkook and he was the king of the kingdom. It seemed like a joke until the wedding invitation came to their doorstep one spring day.
Coincidently, Ji Eun fell ill a few days before the wedding and as a result, neither she nor her aunt could make it to the wedding.
After that, Mina's letter came less, she would write less. Vaguely explain anything. She mentioned Jungkook many times but as time passed it felt like life had left her. Ji Eun recalls one particular letter that didn't sit right with her. In the letter, she expressed her fear of Jungkook writing quote
"Sometimes I look him in the eyes and it's like I don't recognize the person before me. I see something terrifying brewing beneath those black eyes. Like a monster waiting to break from its cage."
Her once lively letters were now soaked in depression and just like that the letters stopped.
For years they waited, Mina had wanted to look for her years earlier but her aunt had contracted pneumonia and couldn't be left alone. She tried writing to Mina many times but to no avail.
Her beloved aunt passed away and she was once again alone.
Now here she stood, in this very town, years later. Preparing to enter the lair of the beast. The rumors she had heard around town about Jungkook were enough to fuel her belief, he must have had something to do with Mina's disappearance as well as the other wives.
She would find out the truth of what happened to her beloved cousin, even if it killed her.
🌸
The wedding is nothing short of elegant. The church is decorated with the finest of flowers and drapes in the kingdom. Villagers are seated on either end of the room.
Ji Eun sighs, calming her nerves as she breathes in and out. Her wedding dress was prepared in less than 3 hours and a maid had styled her hair into a neat bun earlier. White carnations were placed around the bun. Her dress had a long train extended behind her and the bouquet was made from pink and white roses along with baby's breaths, all picked fresh from the palace garden.
She observes herself in the mirror, waiting anxiously for everything to begin.
She wishes Areum was here, she wouldn't be back from their trip until a week from now. She wonders if Taehyung would attend. He was probably stunned upon hearing the news.
She had to do this! Mina was everything to her and she would find out what happened no matter what it took.
The tell-tale sound of trumpets playing a familiar tune is her signal as she straightens her posture, waiting to be escorted down the aisle.
The crowd of villagers are dead silent, solemnly watching her walk down the petal-covered isle. She spots Taehyung in the far corner, fears evident in his eyes.
It would be fine, she reassures herself.
She would be fine.
One face in particular stands out to her among the crowd. It's a man, he has plump lips and sharp yet sad-looking eyes. His hair is midnight blue. He's beautiful, she thinks as their eyes meet only for a split second.
Reaching the altar Jungkook sits upon his throne waiting patiently. She sits herself down upon the throne chair next to his. As the priest opens his mouth to speak, she drowns him out. The rest of the ceremony goes by in a blur of unfamiliar faces and prolonged vows.
Lee Ji Eun becomes the seventh wife of King Jeon Jungkook of the Kingdom of Narcisse.
Facing the crowd, everyone collectively bows to her as a heavy, jewel-encrusted crown is placed gently upon her head.
The people chant collectively.
"Queen Ji Eun" over and over.
She spots the man from before, now with his back facing her as he leaves the church.
This was just the beginning.
She will uncover the truth, she thinks, as she feels Jungkook slide his hand into her own.
