"S-stop!!" My head jerked up. Who was screaming? It might just be angust, but it kind of sounded like-

"It's too late for that, May Maple." May? I sprinted over to the source as I heard another cry.

She was struggling to stay on her feet, obviously near passing out.

Her attacker pulled his fist back again.

No. My overprotective side took over and I ran in between them, taking the punch myself. And that guy was no sissy, either.

I heard a dull thunk as May collapsed behind me. That's it. He is going to pay.

I felt my typically well-controlled temper begin to rise up, and for once I didn't bother to try to clam myself down.

My fists shook with rage, and my eyes became what my sister has nicknamed 'the emerald fire'.

He smirked. Whoa. Brendan? May's childhood friend? I didn't even like this guy in the first place, but now?

Oh, this is going to be fun.

----------------------

It was around six A.M. the day after the whole attack ended. My eyelids began to fall. No... Must... Stay... *yawn* ...Awake...

The nurse walked over to me. "Please, just get some rest." She begged me as she had been doing all night.

Click. Click.

"Your friend will be just fine. Do you think she would honestly want you to stay up all night worrying about her?" The purple haired doctor assured me, having come back from the room where May was being taken care of.

"Fine." I said grouchily. (I blame the lack of sleep and the fact my friend was hospital.)

"But for the record, I was not worried." I clarified, wrapping myself in the blanket they had given me earlier. "Not worried at all..."

-------------------

"Excuse me? You are Drew, correct? The victim May Maple's friend?" I took my eyes off the floor to find officer Jenny standing in front of me.

"Yes, ma'am." I answered honestly, wondering where she was going with this.

"Would you mind coming to the police station with me to tell us some details?" She asked.

"Of course." Was my two syllable answer.

------------------

"Fine! I admit I attacked her of my own free will! Happy?" Brendan said, finally cracking under the pressure of both the police and the eye witness.

"We all ready knew that, buster. We all so know that you are the head of the B and B, or Brendan boys gang that we have been tracking for the past couple months. What we want to know right now, is why you were attacking this innocent girl, who was supposedly your childhood friend!" Officer Jenny countered.

"Fine. I'll tell you." Brendan all but yelled. "Our client demanded that that stupid May brat stay away from the pot head or we would beat him up." He explained as if I wasn't right there.

Wait. May was doing that to protect me? Things are starting to make sense now...

"Then I told her that she would go to that dance with me, but she had the nerve to say no. So I destroyed her. Or would have if Mr. Plant hadn't stepped in." He complained. "And before you say anything, I ain't telling you who my partners are."

"Not to worry. We've already caught them, and they're just waiting to see you again. Thank you for your time here, Mr. Hayden."

--------------------

"Oh! Father! I can't- I mean, I won't- no, uh... What was my line again?"

I grimaced. May's understudy hadn't exactly bothered memorizing her lines. The play was in a few days, and by the looks of it, things were going to be a major flop. This is bad.

I was okay other than a few bruises from the fight, but May was going to be hospitalized for the next short while.

Had she really done all of that to protect me?

I headed back to my dorm for the night. I would have stopped by to see May, but the hospital had said that I couldn't see her for the next few days. Oh, the drama of my life.

-----------------------

I waited backstage for the performance to begin.

My costume consisted of 'worn out' overalls with a white shirt and floppy straw hat. I took a deep breath in and let it out. I wasn't nervous... No. Me? nervous?

Oh, who was I kidding.

I was internally freaking out. I was a co-ordnater, and I constantly preformed. What was different about this? Everything. In contests I showcased my Pokemon. The spotlight was on them, not on me.

Also, although Lyra had gotten down most of the lines, it was still a little unnatural, and don't forget the kiss scene.

"Ya ready, Drew?" I turned around to find Lyra. NOT IN COSTUME!

"The play's in five minutes! Why are not in your dress!!!!!!!" I yell whispered, as not to have the audience hear all the commotion back stage.

She smiled sweetly. "Because I'm not playing Ariana, thank goodness."

"Then who..." The director came out from a different part of the area where we were waiting, accompanying by none other than-

"MAY!!!!!!!!!!!! But, what- how- what- how-" I stuttered over and over. She was in costume, wearing a simple but pretty dark brown 'peasant's dress' with a light brown belt thingy.

She giggled. "I was recovering quickly, so they said I could get to do the play."

I smirked, glad that she was okay. "Well, I would say 'break a leg', but knowing you, you actually would, and we don't want another hospital visit, now do we?"

"GRASSHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!" She screamed and whacked me on the shoulder.

"I probably deserved that one..." I said as I rubbed my now sore shoulder.

"Shhhh!! Onstage now!!!" May quickly scooted onstage, being the only one in the opening act.

"...and we are pleased to bring you this year's production of Or Forever Hold Your Peace."

The curtains rose and the performance began.

--------------------

Yeah!! May's alright!! (No surprise)

Next chappie's the play.
