We had bought our coffees - actually we had become such regulars the coffee maker/seller person knew our orders off by heart - and were sitting at our also regular table. I was halfway through teasing Darren about his pink-rimmed glasses when a shadow came up behind him, the woman put her hand on the Darren's shoulder.
"Hey, handsome" she said as she leaned in to kiss him on the cheek. Darren made a sudden movement to avoid the incoming kiss, and nearly fell of his chair. At the same time I accidently spit coffee all over the table. I mumbled a weak "sorry" and immediately grabbed a napkin, that wasn't soaked in coffee, from the table and started wiping down the mess. She was giving me a look of disgust. So I made the most disgusting face I could make to her. Excuse me, who does she think she is? More importantly, who is she? "K-Katherine" Darren spluttered. "I thought you were going to wait in the car."
"That got boring, besides I was missing you" she touched the tip of his nose as she said "you". Darren quickly pushed her hand away. "Umm... Jane this is umm..."
"His girlfriend" Kate finished for him, she had a smug smile about on her face. I felt like I had just been punched in the gut. "What! Katherine, no! What are you saying?!" I gave slight nod of understanding and got up, and quickly started to walk away. I wanted to run but I wouldn't give her the satisfaction of that. "WAIT Jane, I can explain." He bit his lip angrily and glared at Katherine before getting up and running after me. "Jenelle, wait, slow down!" Darren called after me through the crowd. One part of me wanted to leave and never see him again, and the other part of me wanted him to explain himself. That was the part which made me slowdown. He reached for my arm and pulled me away from the surging crowd.
"Am I detecting jealousy" he teased "ok sorry, not funny" I could tell he was trying to lighten the mood. I didn't find it amusing. "Stop acting dumb, you know what this is about" I poked his chest with my finger. "I thought we were just friends" he said dumbstruck as he rubbed his chest. "Did you really, I thought, that you thought, that we thought, that we were more than friends" I said disbelievingly.
"I tried to make us more than friends, but you wouldn't let me"
"You're unbelievable; we've only known each other for two weeks! You know I'm the kind of person to take things slow."
"Exactly, I know, wait we know so much about each other, it's as if we've known each other for months!" He cried desperately as he grabbed my shoulders.
"What, because of morning coffee and late night conversations on the phone... "I said as I pushed his hands away "... I've never even had a conversation with you without you wearing your dumb sunglasses!" I burst out.
"You've never given me the chance to" he took off his glasses and we stared into each other's eyes. I looked away and shook my head.
"What are you talking about, through a date?! I told you I'm not ready" I said annoyed. He reached out and held my hands, and he said ever so smoothly "you've never even tried". I stared into his hypnotic gaze once again, and after what felt an hour. I forcefully let go, there was one small problem... "You apparently already have a girlfriend!!!" I yelled; because people started staring he quickly put his glasses back on.
"She's not my girlfriend believe me, wait don't go please, wait." I glared at him. "Ok, I'll give you the truth; it was the celebratory end of production party for my new movie at my house. Ok I'll hurry up, wait..." my facial expressions said it all "... We were drunk and Katherine advanced on me... and I, I kissed her back, but I stopped. I wasn't drunk enough to not know that, that how can I say this... my heart belongs to you." I didn't know how to feel, "why is she here?" I mumbled.
"We were both over the limit to drive" he explained quickly "we were the last one's there and no-one could drive her home... so I let her sleep in the guest room, but I swear nothing more happened. I was just driving her home this morning. There is nothing, nothing between me and her, please believe me." I was so hurt, but I wasn't the type to show those types of feelings, I found it a sign of weakness, it's just how I felt, and it's just how I was raised. So I became angry instead.
"You see..." I suddenly cried out "...this is why I wanted to take things slow, it's good because if we were in an actual relationship I would've been really hurt" I pushed him away and continued to run the rest of the way to my workplace, Darren couldn't stop me this time. I fought back tears as I heard his cries to tell me to stop. ***
As soon as Katherine had touched Darren's lips he knew he was so in the wrong, a classic fool. Yet he kissed her back. Why?
He knew the story and why she was so hurt, she told him how she fell in love with a man, how fast their relationship began, but also how quickly it ended, she was left hurt, and scared to fall in love with someone again. But then it was only when he heard Jenelle shout her last few words to him that he realised how much these things meant to her, Jane said the opposite but it was clear just how much he had hurt her. He hated himself for it. He had hurt her and he knew he would do whatever he had to do to get her back.
