The reason Hades named her Athena is because she's the only one out of the Olympian's he can tolerate and just that she's not stupid, but he still respects Artemis for being a maiden, he just feels like eventually she will want a child but can't have one without breaking her oath unless she had one the way Athena had her children which was through her head. Also, this Athena does take after Maleficent in the wings gene, but she does not have the horns and was also born with her father's powers.

So Charon is named after Athena's basically uncle in everything but blood because whenever Hades was busy when she was younger, he would make Charon, the guy who rows the boat in the Underworld, watch her while he was taking souls across the river in the Underworld, Hades' domain. Long story short, they bonded and she thinks of him as an uncle.

The difference between Athena and Mal is that Athena understands her mother's backstory and why she cursed Aurora and knows that the two still keep in touch even while on the Isle. Mal only knows that her mother was a villain and, in her eyes, still is.

While Athena had Maleficent's wings and Hades' powers, Mal only had Maleficent's powers and still needs a spell book to do certain spells that she doesn't quite know how to cast, like how she looked through the spell book to find a love spell/potion to put on Ben in the first Descendants movie.
