Note: this is my take on the story of Heloise and Abelard. All that we know about them is from their letters and writings in the 12th century. Many details have been guessed (where there is insufficient historical information present), embellished, or left out here - but my goal is to keep the heart of their story the same.

She is crying in the aisles of the chapel, hiding herself amidst its pews. It is empty, and heavenly light shines through the myriad of stain-glass windows in dancing blues and reds and yellows. It still smells of incense from an earlier mass, and she keeps her head in her palms; the scenes around her - great icons of great feats, of faces staring solemnly and piously, with vacancy in their eyes - send her into a new fit of sobs each time she glances toward them.
It is not long before there appears a figure on the pew next to her. Marie refuses to look up.
"I know how you feel," coaxes a gentle voice. Warm as honey.
"You do not."
"Truly I do. I was around your age when I myself was sent to live in the cloisters."
Marie then lifts her eyes to look at the figure, and finds a nun dressed in full habit. But her face... it is strikingly beautiful. It takes Marie aback. She is not young, but she is not old. Strands of red hair fall onto her face from beneath her veil, and bright, piercing green eyes stand out against the pale of her skin.
