City traffic filled the silence of Lilith's still and unkept apartment, reruns of day time tv was the only humane presence in the dimly lit space. Lilith was stretched out and fixed to a Permanent spot on her modern grey couch, pillows were kicked and scattered across the littered floor.
She let out a deep sigh as she picked her frail frame up and grabbed the remote, her once curly auburn hair is now a mound of frizz and knots, her eyes were sunken from endless nights of disturbed sleep. A snarled growl exhausted itself from her stomach as she turned the television off for the first time in months. Lilith sat up and pushed the warm blanket from her body, she made her way to her disarrayed kitchen full of shopping, empty takeout boxes and dishes.
Fixing herself a fresh glass of orange juice and a slice of toast Lilith peered at the stained Calendar that clung to her empty fridge, today marked six months since her sisters death and yet it felt just as painful as that same day. Lilith gulped down her juice and bit into the corner of her toast exposing a crisp crunch.
An alarming tone broke the silence and Lilith grabbed her phone.
"Hello" Lilith answered
"Hello, is this miss summers?" Replied the unidentifiable voice.
"Err...speaking" Lilith said standing up straight
" This is Kaitlyn Williams I work for mr whiteguard, I just wanted to confirm your appointment at 10:45 regarding your application?"
" yes, yes! Definitely" Lilith shook her head annoyed at her forgetfulness.
"See you then miss summers"
Lilith placed her phone on the kitchen counter and immediately disregarded her slice of toast rushing to the shower.
The warm spray freshened up her body ready to be dressed in a smart dress suit with a pair of red heels to match her bold lipstick. Her now put together hair framed her pale milky face as she coated her lashes with mascara.
Grabbing her long formal coat she raced out to street to call a passing cab.
As she approached the car another hand reached for the handle.
Lilith turned to see piercing blue eyes and boyish mousy brown curls.
"Sorry" Thomas excused himself looking to flag down the next cab
"Thomas? ...it's fine you can take this one" she politely gestured
"Have we met? We could share if you don't mind?"
Lilith entered the cab scooting along to make room and looking back to see Thomas climb in behind her.
" we met at my sisters funeral, Joanna?"
Thomas smiled " Lilith...sorry, yes of course" he chuckled rubbing his eyes with shame and tossing around his curls.
" it's fine" she giggles looking down at her knees.
Thomas directs the driver to his destination as does Lilith.
Thomas's fragrant of an expensive pine and spice aftershave fills the cab, as he turns to look at Lilith his gaze making her blush.
" how have you been Lilith?"
nodding her head " I have been better, but hopefully after today I will return to better."
"Job interview?" Thomas face grows a half smile as the back of his finger taps her dress.
"Yes"she smiles back
The cab stops and Thomas thanks the driver opening the door to the turbulent city, his head looking back and waving a fair well to Lilith and closing the door.
Lilith gathers her belongings as she reaches the tall glass building.
The contemporary shiny build organised with fine art and decor and tastefully dressed people overwhelming Lilith as she darted her eyes looking for her right place .
a lady at the front desk flags her and calls over to Lilith.
"Miss summers?" Her puckered lip and immaculate appearance discourages Lilith as she straightens her tight dress.
"Err...yes, I'm here for my appointment with mr whiteguard"
She directs Lilith to a waiting area of dark leather armchairs.
Every surface gleamed with chrome and white marble
Lilith tucked her auburn hair behind her ears and looked around awkwardly making eye contact with the receptionist several times
"Mr whiteguard will see you now"she grinned
Lilith rushed to gathered her things and followed her through the huge silver doors.
"Ahhh miss summers" a silver haired gentleman stood to attention as Lilith entered the room.
"mr whiteguard" shaking his hand with a firm grip.
"Please, take a seat" he smiled. He leaned back in his desk chair as he run through a sheets of paper detailing Lilith's expertise.
"You are quite the expert in you field of work miss summers, very impressive" his foxy smirk grew wider
"I think your business would be a great investment and I am happy to say I would love to have partnership of it"
Lilith's sprung to her feet in delight and excitement, all the while trying to compose a professional manner but her cheeks hurt from grinning.
"I would love to discuss and draw up a plan and talk about getting other companies on board to expand this idea"mr whiteguard began listing the properties to his partnership, he picked up the phone and dialled his contacts ,scribbling down information.
"I want you to call these when you can, let me know what they say"
Lilith smoothed the piece of paper between her fingers.
Her life was starting to return to better..
