It was a normal family breakfast that day. Or so I thought. Until my little brother broke the peace.
"Mom, Yon," Khalil called our attention as he dropped his fork and knife and clasped his hands together.
"Dude, you okay? Or are you gonna be in trouble again?" I teased my little brother just like old times. But truthfully even I felt nervous just looking at him.
Finally a smile broke out of his face. "Sira ka talaga ate!"
"Don't you 'ate' me! I'm only older by a few years."
"Five."
"Whatever."
"Rhian, let your brother speak." Mom, always the voice of reason.
Khalil stuck his tongue out at me and I swear it was like we were kids again versus actual adults.
Then he cleared his throat before continuing, "I'm gonna propose to Gabbi tonight."
This time it was both mom and I who dropped our cutleries.
"Finally!" "What?"
Mom and I both exclaimed at the same time.
"Finally, magkaka-apo na ko!" Mom said while clapping her hands.
I rolled my eyes at mom. Seriously, was my bro thinking clearly? Marriage? What?
"Seryoso ba yan? Or baka prank to ha. Nasan na ba yung camera mo? Is this for your vlog?" I looked around our dining area to check for possible hidden cameras.
Khalil pulled me down to my chair again. "Ang OA mo talaga, Rhi." He said, while shaking his head at me.
"Seryoso nga ako. I mean, she's the only woman I can see myself with and I can honestly see my future with her. So might as well make it official. Like official, official."I grimaced at the thought. Maybe bitter ako due to my past relationships, but I really do not believe in marriage or serious relationships anymore.
"I can't believe my son is really all grown-up now." Mom finally spoke up after a long silence.
"Uh-oh, here comes the waterworks." I quickly handed my mom a table napkin.
"Aww mom, I'll always be your baby boy. Magtatampo ako pag hindi na." Khalil laughed as he went to hug our mom.
"Okay, I'm gonna go." I started getting up from my seat but Khalil pulled me towards him and mom.
"No you're not. Group hug!" He squeezed me and mom tightly and we all laughed just like old times.
Okay, so I might be bitter about marriages and romance and stuff, but I was truly happy for my brother and honestly, maybe I'm bitter about his proposal because it meant he is going to leave the house soon. And I'm gonna miss our moments like this.
I sighed. It's gonna be a long day.
