The mermaid hybrid

1. first day in 11th grade

My name is Erica Rothery but i am called Rikki by my friends and schoolmates.My family members,on the other hand,call me Erica.My family members consists of my father,my paternal aunt,my maternal grandma and i.My mother,unfortunately,is dead,she died a year after my birth in a car crash or so i was told.

I live on an island called Devon island,a magical place that is a safe haven to supernaturals according to my grandma,as my story unfolds you will understand the logic that supports that statement.After all i am also a member of the supernatural world that thinks of devon island as a safe haven.You see i am half witch and half mermaid.My father is the one with the witch ancestry.My mother though was a mermaid and my grandma too was but she has lost her mermaid powers,i've tried to ask her how but my efforts have proved futile.

I walked to the cafe,the pint,where i and Emily meet everyday before we take the short walk to school.I entered and went straight to our favourite spot,the booth at the left corner of the cafe.Her head was bent over a book.

''Hi emily'',I said while slipping into the booth and sitting in the chair adjacent to hers.

''Hi rikki'',Emily said.

''So are you ready to go'',I asked.

''Of course what took you so long anyway,i'm not sure i want to be late on the first day of a new school year'',Emily said frowning at me.

''Okay Miss Punctuality lets go'',I said teasingly while standing up.

Emily grunted,stood up and put her book into her backpack and we started the short walk from the cafe to school.

''So what do you want me to get you for your birthday gift'',Emily asked.

''I dont know just get me anything you think i'd like'',I said and my face got gloomy at the thought of my birthday.

''Whats wrong,whenever its your birthday,you are normally so excited about it and the gifts you'll receive'',Emily asked.

''I dont know,my instincts keep telling me that something significant is going to happen on that day,something that will disrupt my whole life as it is now'',I said rubbing the back of my head gingerly.

''Just remember that no matter what happens,we'll face it together,after all we are two very powerful witches'',She said and i smiled she was right.

Just as we stepped into the school hallway,the warning bell for classes that were about to begin,rang.We walked hurriedly to our lockers.

After taking a book out of her locker,emily hugged me and said,''I'll see you later"

"Sure",I said.

I took my books and was walking to my first class in a hurried pace while looking into my school schedule and I bumped into a muscular wall and the papers fell to the ground.I dropped to the ground to pick them up and a hand picked them up with me.

"I'm so so sorry,I wasn't looking where I was going plus I'm so clumsy",he said.

I looked up at him and my eyes collided with electrifying blue eyes.

"Oh never mind,I was the one who wasn't looking where I was going and you are most definitely not clumsy looking...uh,I mean not clumsy",I said as a little hue pink appeared on my cheeks at my statement.

"I'll take that as a compliment,Miss...?",he said while we stood up.

"Call me Rikki",I said quickly.

"Well its nice to meet you,I'm Nick",He said.

"Nice to meet you too",I said.

"Well I don't want to be late to my first class but I'll see you later,right?",I asked cautiously.

"Sure",He said.

I smiled and we both went our separate ways.when I got to class,I was delighted to realise that the teacher had not arrived but just as I sat down,Mr Robert came in and the day began.
