“hey Donny” Jake says before smiling sympathetically. I smile back, as a thank you for trying to cheer me up and for using the nickname we used to use as children.

“hi Jay Jay” I say quietly and sigh.

When our father gets back in the car, we drive home in silence. my dad is clearly pissed at me because the police will be called as to why I got the injuries in the first place and if I’m in any more danger staying where I am.

We arrive home and I open the door to slide myself into the wheelchair, flinching at the pain in my stomach. I wheel myself into the living room and wait for instructions. He picks up a knife and turns back to face me. I just look into his eyes and wait.

There is no getting out of this. To him it's just another game and he would just ‘win’ if I died.

Something washes over me, and I soon decide I’m not giving him the satisfaction of winning again. I stand up and force back tears as my chest erupts with a fresh wave of agony. I bare my fangs and growl, unfolding my wings with a failed attempt to scare him.

He quickly stabs me in the shoulder, and I scream, unable to think about anything other than the pain. I bite his arm and blood gushes out his wound the second I let go and he shoves me down and stomps on my chest.

Ash is stronger than me with no doubt, but I know I need to fight for my life. That’s what my mum and little sister Abbie would have wanted.
