Stolen Hope - A Super Mario Bros Fanfic

Chapter 1 - Panic on the Horizon

The rising sun bathed the Mushroom Kingdom with a magnificent golden glow, signifying that the average citizen would begin to stir. However, within the massive grey-bricked castle that towered the kingdom, preparations were taking place. Inside the castle's throne room, many mushroom-headed people rushed around frantically. The small people, known as toads, had mushroom-shaped heads, spotted with varying colours of polka dots. They also bore vests which complemented the colours of their spotted heads. The group of them seemed to be cleaning up the castle halls and the throne room.

The chaos had summoned the presence of their leader, the door behind the throne creaking open. Out stepped Princess Peach, a beautiful woman who wore her signature bright pink dress with a deep blue brooch. She also wore large, deep blue coloured earrings and sleek white gloves. The golden crown seated upon her head commanded the respect of toads everywhere. Despite her position, she treated her people more like family than subjects, due to her kind heart and compassion for others. "Please, calm down guys. This is Mario and Luigi who are coming for a visit, not royals from another kingdom!" she chuckled quietly. The presence of their ruler so sudden had caught the toads off guard, some flinching or dropping their tools, but they were glad to conclude their cleaning, each breathing a sigh of relief.

Despite her mood now, laughing with her people, she couldn't help but feel uneasy about her nightmare from last night. She didn't really remember it all that well, only vivid cries that still echoed through her thoughts. They had sounded like her own, alongside her people and the Mario Bros. The persistent thought of it made her anxious, but she tried to brush it off, to no avail. She's had dreams like this before, but it just...felt off somehow. Although it was probably nothing, she would confide in the brothers when they arrived, mainly to get it off her chest. "Toadsworth?" the princess had called out to a toad with brown spots atop his tan coloured mushroom cap, alongside unique purple attire. Toadsworth held his signature cane, while sporting a light grey moustache and small glasses.

"Yes princess?" he spoke back with eagerness edging his tone, ready to assist his leader.

"Did you send a group to go retrieve the brothers?"

"They left quite a while ago. They should be returning shortly with master Mario and master Luigi I presume"

"Thank you, I think everything is prepared, so now we are waiting for their return," Peach said excitedly. "I'm going to return to my room while I wait, please let me know when they arrive Toadsworth"

"Of course, I will inform you personally upon their arrival princess"

And with that, the princess turned back and went back to her room with her plan to pass the time. She walked in and sat herself upon her soft pink bed and reached for her bedside counter. Upon it sat a cell phone with a bright pink case with blue highlights. Upon grabbing it, she began to call one of her best friends and cousin, Daisy. Normally she would want her over too, but since Daisy lives in Sarasaland, she is too far away to organize visits as frequently. When Daisy picked up, they both instantly were able to start conversation with ease.

"Hi Daisy! It's so nice to hear from you again! How did your speech go?" Peach questioned with enthusiasm.

"It went great! I managed to convince the council to build the dam to stop the flash flooding in the small town of Fiore!!" She replied, obviously excited. "My dad even said I handled it professionally!"

"That's amazing! I told you that you'd do great!"

"Thanks Peachy!....Sorry to kill the tone, but have you heard from the Mario bros recently? I'm kind of worried about Luigi, but I think that's just his anxiety rubbing off on me"

"Funny you ask, they should be coming over to the castle soon! What concerns you about Luigi?" Peach asked, confused.

"Well, he normally messages me every morning, to check in or just to talk, or at least once a day, but I haven't heard from him since 2 days ago. I get he was busy with Mario yesterday morning, but what about last night and today?" Daisy questioned anxiously.

"That is a bit odd... but I think that you are overthinking it a litt-"

"Well have you heard from Mario?" Daisy cut her off.

"Well.. no, but he's a busy person, I'm sure they're fin-"

Once again, Peach was cut off, but this time by someone entering her room and beginning to speak in a nervous tone.

"Princess, the toads have returned, but they couldn't find master Mario, nor master Luigi '' Toadsworth stated nervously, revealing himself by walking in. He had said this just loud enough for Daisy to hear

"THEY'RE MISSING?!" Daisy shouted in a serious tone, clearly worried for her boyfriend and his brother.

What's with everyone cutting me off today...?

"Everyone, calm down, I'm sure they are both okay," Peach stated, trying to be optimistic and calm as per usual, hiding her fear. "I'll keep you up-to-date Daisy, but I have to go deal with this, try to stay calm, I'll get to the bottom of this, trust me."

"I trust you Peach, you are probably right, but please, stay safe," Daisy said, calming down "Bye."

Peach hung up the phone, stood up and faced Toadsworth "Take me to the Toads who went to get the brothers please"

"Of course, your highness" Toadsworth stated clearly shocked at how calm she was.

Surely they're fine, they always are!

On the duo's way to the castle courtyard, they were intercepted by the mailtoad, holding out a letter.

"I know you seem a bit busy right now," He stated cheerily "But this letter showed up in my pile this morning, addressed to you princess! Hope you have a great day!" He finished as Peach grasped the letter.

"Thankyo-" Peach once again was cut off, but this time, by her own shock. She felt as if a wave washed over her, knocking her down under its crushing weight. No longer could she doubt the two were okay, this was too coincidental. She had flipped over the envelope to see a wax seal, containing a logo of the rival kingdom's leader, the turtle-shelled tyrant who has terrorized Peach time and time again. His name? King Bowser Koopa.
