Y/n sat in her car, her eyes trained on the thermometer in her hands. 100.8. Sighing, she stuffed the object back into her purse before heading into the FBI building. Since she was the oldest child of three, Y/n was used to taking on the parental role that her drunk uncle chose not to fill, instead choosing to drink away his life. However, she never had anybody to take care of her, and therefore grew up learning how to take care of things herself. And she wasn't about to call into work just because she wasn't feeling 100%, no. Instead, she decided to ignore the fact that she was sick and work through the pain. Besides, as she saw it, the bad guys won't take a day off just because she was having an off day.
Once she was inside, she took her respectful spot at her office space. Sure, it was tiny, and her chair squeaked every time she moved, but the memorable photo-frames thrown around was good enough for her to love it. However, it wasn't the selfies of her and her dogs, nor her displayed degree from Yale that was her favorite part of her office. Instead, it was the fact that her work area was directly connected to her best friend's. She and Spencer had hit it off from the moment she started working for the BAU, and ever since then, their friendship has only grown stronger. The only times she hated sharing a space with him was days like this.
Being a profiler made it relatively easy to read somebody's body language and emotions, but being their best friend made it seem like a piece of pie. So even though she was always able to read Spencer and discern how he felt, he could do the exact same thing to her.
The small squeak that sounded once Y/n sat down alerted Spencer that she was here. He stuck a bookmark in his book and set it down on his desk in one swift motion, and in Y/n's opinion way too fast for her to keep up with the movements.
"Hey, Y/n! Guess what?" He asked, his eyes gaining brightness with each word that effortlessly slipped past his lips. Although her head seemed like it was pounding into her skull, Y/n couldn't help but grin at his demeanor.
"What's up, Spence?" She watched as he practically threw his duffel from the floor beside him to onto his lap, digging through the bag as if he were searching for gold. At last, he pulled a DVD case from the bag, holding it out for her to see. "No way, you got it? How?!"
"I saw it at a thrift store." He laughed. "You wouldn't believe how lucky it is to have found the fourth Doctor Who DVD, especially at this timing." She kept on grinning as he rambled on about how astronomically low the chances were to find the DVD, but eventually accidentally zoned out. She had never done that during one of Spencer's ramblings before, so it was a surprise to Spencer once he realized that she wasn't paying attention. He snapped his fingers in front of her face, and eventually, she snapped out of it.
"Huh? Oh, sorry, Spence." She gave him an apologetic look. He was about to ask if she was alright when Garcia announced that they had a case. Great, Y/n thought. Just my luck.
In conclusion, four bodies were all discovered on the same hiking trail, each corpse no farther than a couple of hundred yards from each other. Luckily the case was in Virginia, so they were able to drive there. Y/n was already beginning to get nauseous and didn't know if she could handle being in a jet at the moment.
Everybody paired up in the FBI vans, and of course, Spencer and Y/n chose to ride with each other. Normally Y/n would volunteer to drive, so when she asked if Spencer wanted to he was more than confused, but hesitantly accepted. Right now they were only half an hour out from the police station, which is where Hotch sent them to go.
