「 chapter eight 」

Rolling over for what felt like the hundredth time that night, Y/n opened her eyes and glanced at the clock beside her: 1:48 am. Sighing, she blindly reached over for her phone, and with a bit of struggle, she finally felt her fingers grasp around the familiar device. She scrolled through her contacts until her best friend's name popped up, and she clicked the call button.

It rang a few times before Spencer's voice sounded, sounding tired. Y/n immediately felt bad, thinking that she had woken him up. The whole team had the next two days off, so everybody was most definitely trying tk catch up on sleep.

"Hey, um, did I wake you?" She meekly responds, rubbing her neck softly. She heard a yawn from the other end of the phone. "I'm so sorry, I didn't know you were sleeping. I'll let you go."

"Huh? Yeah, no, you didn't wake me." She could hear shuffling from the other end of the line and imagined it was the sound of him sitting up in bed. Giggling, Y/n playfully shook her head.

"Spencer, you are by far the worst liar I've ever met."

"What? No, I'm not!" He defends, the sleep instantly washing away from his voice.

"Yeah, sure you aren't." She laughs. "Anyway, I couldn't sleep and was wondering if you wanted to come over? If not that's totally fine, I don't blame you. I mean, it is one if our few days off tomorrow, and I probably should've just let you sleep." She hears chuckling from the other end, causing her to furrow her eyebrows. "What's so funny?"

"It's just amusing to me when you ramble on about pointless things." He laughs. "Yeah, I'll be there. Just give me roughly... eight minutes and fifty-two sevinds." He declares before hanging up, causing Y/n to shake her head at his calculation.

-

The duo was on the sofa, just starting at nothing in particular. Y/n was cuddling into Spencer's side, which wasn't an unusual event to them. A dim lamp was turned on toward Spencer's side, providing just enough light for them to see each other. Just Spencer being there was enough for her to fall asleep right then and there, but she fought it, not wanting to have called him over for nothing.

"Do you want to play truth or truth?" She quietly questions, causing Spencer to glance down at her.

"Sure." He smiled. This game was commonly played amongst the two on nights like these, where none of them were awake enough to do any dares.

"Alright, I'll start. Who was your role model growing up? And you can't say any of your parents." Spencer barely has to think about his answer.

"Charles Darwin, for sure." This causes Y/n to furrow her eyebrows.

"Really? I mean, I would've thought it'd be Einstein."

"No, I've never been a particular fan of his. Sure, I admire his work. But in my opinion, Charles Darwin is better."

"And that wouldn't be because you're jealous of Einstein being collectively named as the smartest person to have ever existed, right?" She grins.

"What? No!" Y/n shakes her head, laughing. "Whatever, it's my turn to ask." He declares, causing her to laugh even harder.

-

A few rounds have passed, and now it's Y/n's turn to ask Spencer something.

"Hm... alright. What's one of your favorite qualities about me?" She jokes, not expecting a legit answer. But to her surprise, he seemed to think she was serious.

"I don't think I can narrow it down to just one thing. I mean, there's a lot of things I can think of." He announces, squinting his eyes as he thought about what to say.

"There's the way you always create smiley-faces with the creamer when you add it into your coffee at work. And there's also the way you gently tug at your sleeves when you're lost in thought. You always make sure to hug me every day, even when I get sick. And I can't forget about how your nose and cheeks get flushed when you get flustered. There's more, if you want me to continue on." He offers, before feeling Y/n shift against him.

He furrows his eyebrows once she doesn't answer, and decides to move so that he can see her. Thanks to the dim lamp facing her direction, Spencer notices Y/n's watery eyes, which are fixed on him. He knits his eyebrows once again, wondering why his best friend was crying.

"No, no, no, don't cry. I hate it when you cry." He confesses. "What happened, did I say something?" Y/n begins shaking her head.

"No, it's just, I- I didn't know you pay that much attention to me." She admits, her voice cracking slightly. "I feel so loved." She jokes, causing Spencer to smile.

"That's because you are loved, Y/n." He pulls her in for a hug, which she accepts. All of their friends nagged them about getting together at some point, but what they didn't know was that they were both content with what they had now. And just having each other is all they needed.
