「 chapter nine 」

════ ⋆★⋆ ════

Y/n sat perched upon the edge of the bed, eyes trained on her boyfriend, who sat on a wooden chair across from her.  Her heart had been pounding in her chest so loud she imagined Spencer could hear it from his spot across the room.

Just a moment ago he said that he needed to talk to her, and suggested that she sit down for this.  Thoughts flooded through her mind, all what-ifs.  What if he wants to break up?  What if he doesn't like me anymore?  What if this is the end of us?  No matter how much she wanted them to stop, they just kept running through her head.

"So," He speaks up, halting her thoughts all at once.  "I imagine you're wondering why I brought you in here." Y/n stays still, aside from her fingers, which were forcefully squeezing the bedsheets beside her.  Spencer takes that as his cue to continue, but not before clearing his throat.

"I don't really know how to say this, so I guess I'll just, uh, come out with it." He takes in a deep breath, then silence.  His eyes are staring into hers, switching from her left to right eye, then back, as if he were searching for something.  Then he quickly rambles a string of words, so jumbled Y/n almost doesn't catch what he's saying.

"I think we should break up." Those words make her heart drop.  It wasn't that she wasn't expecting it, but more so that hearing the words out loud had a different effect on her than just hearing them run through her head.  She's so caught up in her head and emotions that she doesn't see the heartbreak and pain behind Spencer's eyes.  She had noticed his fidgety movements all day, but didn't bring it up until a few minutes ago.  And that's when he said he needed to talk.  She should've kept her mouth shut.

She's speechless for a multitude of seconds.  Surprisingly enough, throughout the entire time that sentence rang out in her head, not once had she thought about what her response would be.  Realizing he was expecting an answer, she stupidly respond with, "What?" Shaking her head at her ignorance, she jolts up from her spot on the bed so fast that it makes her head rush.

"Okay, look.  Whatever I did, I'll fix it.  I promise." She begins rambling.  "Spencer, I swear I'll make it right, whatever it is that I did.  Please, just give me the chance to fix it.  Please-" Shes cut off by Spencer, whose eyebrows are furrowed.

"Whoa, slow down, Y/n.  You didn't do anything wrong.  Okay?  It's me, I- It's because of me." He states, leaving Y/n even more confused.  Baffled, she slowly returns to her previous spot on the bed, never taking her eyes off of his.

"Wait, what?" Her voice has dropped to nearly a whisper.  "I don't understand." Spencer sighs, his eyes dropping to the ground for the first time since they entered the room.

"It's my fault that we're breaking up." Apparently this explained nothing, because Y/n was still confused.  "Come on, don't do that.  Don't pretend you don't know."

"Spencer, you're making no sense.  What am I pretending to not know?"

"That I'm not good enough for you!" He exclaims, leaving her speechless.  He breathes in and out, then repeats the process, bringing his voice level back to normal.  "You deserve somebody better than me, Y/n.  And I know you know it too.  You deserve somebody who's fun, and doesn't spend their days off indoors instead of partying like everyone else.  And I highly doubt you actually enjoy me stating off facts every other minute."

"Wow." Y/n breathes, shaking her head as a ghost of a smile graces her lips.  This time Spencer is the one who's baffled.  "You know, I think this is the first time your genius brain has gotten something wrong." Spencer opens his mouth to speak, but Y/n rushes to it first.  "Europa is three-hundred and ninety point four million miles from Jupiter." Spender knits his eyebrows together, not understand the point of stating that.  "And birches are the most common native tree of Scotland."

"Y/n, I don't understand what you're trying to tell me.  And besides, how do you even know that?  I mean, nothing against you, but those are two incredibly distinct facts, each of which being correct."

"Oh my gosh, Spencer!  Are you seriously this oblivious?" She exclaims, causing Spencer to give her a look of confusion.  "You told me those, Spence.  You may not realize it, but whether you're going on about how bamboo affects a panda's digestive system, or the amount of alcohol the average forty year old man would have to ingest for it to be considered lethal, I hang onto every single word you say.  I always have." For one of the first times in his life, Spencer is speechless.

"Here, think about all of my last boyfriends.  What did they all have in common?" Spencer thinks on the question for a moment, before answering what Y/n thought to be the dumbest thing he's ever said.

"They're... all your ex's?" Although Spencer found nothing factually incorrect with what he just said, Y/n couldn't stop the laugh from escaping her lips.

"No, silly.  They were all smart.  I mean, you're probably exceptionally smarter than all of them combined, but still.  If you haven't noticed yet, I tend to be attracted to geniuses like you." A small smile begins tugging at Spencer's lips before a thought crosses his mind.

"Wait.  None of them seemed to be compatible enough with you, so what makes me so different?" Y/n only softly smiles, before leaning forward to grab his hands into her own.

"Because you, my genius, are Spencer Reid.  And I love you." Spencer can't help the grin that grows across his lips, as well as the deep red tint flushing his features.

Although there were times where Spencer's insecurities got the best of him, Y/n made sure to always assure him that although he may not be perfect, he was perfect for her.
