Yeona walked towards the carriage, her head hanging low as guards followed besides her. Her eyes stung and her throat was sore from the amount of crying she had done earlier. She felt empty inside, her face stained with dry tears.
"Wait!"
Yeona turned around, surprised to see Haechan's face after what had happened in the throne room. He ran towards her but the guards stepped in front of him and he stopped.
"Please," he said. "Let me see her one last time before she goes. I know you both have families who you love, wouldn't you want to say one last word to them before they left forever?"
The guards looked at each other hesitantly before nodding and stepping aside. Haechan thanked them and immediately ran to Yeona, grabbing a hold of her arms.
"Love."
"Why did you do that?" She croaked.
"I had to. I couldn't let him harm you. If he did something-" he pulled her into his arms. "I don't know what I would have done."
"You promised," she whispered. "You promised we'd be together, no matter what." Haechan pulled away to look at her again as a tear fell down her cheek. "I know, I'm sorry."
More tears started to cascade down causing Haechan to immediately cup her cheeks. "I love you, Yeona."
"I love you too."
He pulled her into a kiss and she immediately wrapped her arms around his neck. Their lips molded together, full of love and heartache as tears ran down both of their faces, the taste of salt reaching their tongues. They both knew that this would be their final kiss, their last goodbye.
They broke the kiss and Haechan rested his forehead on hers. "Even if I'm married, my heart will still belong to you and love you forever."
He looked into her glassy eyes and smiled bittersweetly. "Maybe in another life we'll meet again and I'll finally fulfill my promise."
He pulled her into one final hug. "Until then, my love."
