That night in the hospital was one of the worst nights sleep that Sky had ever had. He was alone in a hospital bed, unable to get up, without anyone to comfort him or talk to, and he felt so awful. His phone stayed on the bedside table the whole night, despite his ongoing urges to just grab it and call Ben. But he didn't. He didn't see anyone until the morning, and it wasn't who he was expecting either.
The nurse from the night before came into his room around 8:30 and smiled at him, "Morning Sky, you sleep well?" she asked, placing down some medicine on the bedside table.
Sky continued staring at the blank wall in front of him, just like he had been for the past few hours, not even realising that she'd entered the room.
"Sky?" she asked again, looking very concerned for him. She reached out her hand and placed it on his shoulder gently.
Sky flinched heavily and turned to look at her. She'd already moved her hand off his shoulder by this point, but he still felt the need to brush his own shoulder, as if her hand was still on it. "S-sorry..." he looked down at his legs and played with his hands slightly.
She started to take the medication out of the packets "No, its okay. I just came in to give you your medication, did you sleep well?", she handed over some of the medicine and a glass of water.
Sky took the medication with no problems, acting as normal as possible. "Yeah, when are visiting hours?".
"They start at 9:30 until 12, and then 1 until 5, and then 6 until 10. Have you got someone coming to visit you, Sky?".
"Yeah... my boyfriend" He looked down, weary of what she would think.
"Oh that's nice, what's he like?" She asked, sitting in the chair next to him.
He looked at her "Y-you're not bothered that he's a guy?", he looked slightly confused.
She just laughed and held out her hand, which had a wedding ring on her fourth finger "Of course not. My wife and I have been married for just under a year now, our anniversary is in a couple of weeks".
"Oh, well congratulations" He smiled at her.
"So, your boyfriend? Spill".
"Well, he's a dancer, like me. And he is the most amazing singer, and he's gorgeous, and funny. Oh, and he is just the most talented guy I have ever met, and we went to high school together and now were on tour. It's amazing." Sky was practically glowing as he spoke about Ben.
She smiled as she listened, watching as Sky seemed to be getting better just thinking about him. "Well, I think he sounds wonderful and you're one lucky guy".
Sky looked at his hands, which were on his lap, and shook his head. "I... I'm not a guy..." He sighed. She looked at him, quite sympathetic. "No, no I know what you're going to say. You're gonna tell me that I don't need surgery to change who I am, and I know that, but I feel like I can't give my boyfriend what he wants. I feel like he just wants a normal boyfriend...".
"Sky, I know how you feel. Well not completely, but I do understand. I think it would be helpful if you spoke to Ben about it. I'm sure he could reassure you that you're amazing just the way you are and the he doesn't give a damn if you've had the surgery or not. And if he does care then feel free to" she makes a small punching gesture and laughs.
Sky laughs along with her. "Thanks, uh?..." Only now was he realising that he didn't know her name.
"Annabelle" She smiled.
"Thanks, Annabelle" His phone buzzed beside him and he checked it, hoping it was Ben. He put it away quickly and sighed. "I don't get it. Ben said he was going to be here first thing in the morning and I haven't even got a text from him".
