I drove down the street, heading into the exclusive estates outside of Annapolis. I arrived at the Phelps’ Estates, as my GPS had directed, and parked my car. I stepped out looking at the huge monstrosity that was Pennel Phelps’ home. I really didn’t want to go inside, but it wasn’t like she was out here waiting for me. The edifice looked like it couldn’t have been older than thirty to fifty years, but it was designed to look like a stately manor to old historical money. I can’t say that the Phelps aren’t old money- for as far back as I known the history of the Phelps, they have always been in a position of power and fortune. I walked to the door, and rang the doorbell. A tall, slim, but lurching figure answered the door…he looked a little weatherly, but had posture as if he had a stick up his ass, running alongside his spine. “You must be Mitchell Hollister…have a seat in the foyer. Miss Pennelope will be with you shortly,”
“Thanks,” I replied. I walked into the foyer, staring at the paintings and pictures on the wall. There was a picture of the current Phelps clan- Pennel’s father, her mother, her brother Jansen, and herself. They were in front of a fireplace, which was probably somewhere in this estate. Everyone in the family had dark brunette hair-except her father, who had a salt and pepper mix in his hair and mustache. Pennel also had green eyes like him…her brother Jansen, and her mother had hazel grey-ish eyes.
“Hi,”-I turned to Pennel, a little startled. It seemed like she crept up on me out of nowhere. She looked very beautiful, in her black dinner dress, and sterling silver necklace. Her lips were very red, and her teeth were shimmering white. I smiled. “You look very nice, Pennel,”
“You look quite stunning yourself,” she complimented. “I’d like you to meet my parents,”- my mouth slightly dropped…I hadn’t expected this move. Her father walked into the foyer, looking to me. “So…you are Lieutanant Remy Hollister’s son, the one my Pennelope has been talking about for years…nice to meet you,”
We shook hands, as her mother entered. She stopped, looked at me, and then turned to Pennel. “You are right, Pennel…he does look quite handsome, with those Sapphire blue eyes,”- I kind of blushed at her mother’s compliment. She lightly shook my hand. “So…I hear you are enrolled at the Naval Academy,”
“Yes, Mrs. Phelps…I’m going to get my officer’s ranking,” I said. She smiled at the fact that I called her “Mrs”, and not “ma’am”. She looked to Pennel. “Well hopefully Pennel can complete her studies, and become a medical doctor just like her father,”
“Mitchell…we need to make the restaurant, to get our reservation,” sang Pennel. I laughed a little, and said my goodbyes to Pennel’s parents. We left, walking to my car. Pennel took a deep breath. “This is soooo surreal,”
“Going out with me? It’s not like I’m a movie star,” I gestured, as we got into the Jetta. Pennel looked down. “I know…sounds dorky, right? But I’ve dreamt about being with you- not in a creepy, stalkerish way, but like, going out to dinner,”
I chuckled, starting the car, and peeling out of the driveway. Pennel looked to me. “How is Meridian?”
“I don’t know. She went to spend time with Riley today,” I said. I looked to Pennel…she looked a flushed and queasy. “Are you okay?”
